can anyone reccomend a daily supplement/herbal remedy which maintains healthy bowel functions and/or stops wind.

Thanks

Look at the cause of poor bowel function and wind.  Neither is "normal".  You would be better off removing the offending trigger.

Wind/digestive problems are generally due to the dog being intolerant to an ingredient of dog food.

Biggest offenders:  soya, dairy products and grains.

You could feed charcoal biscuits, or try digestive tablets from Dorwest.

Charlie is fed james wellbeloved food, which we have been told  are free from the biggest allergy triggers, wheat & dairy.  had various vet tests and conclusion of two different vets is a sensitive stomach!  We give him canikur tablets when it flares up, but just wondered if a dietry supplement would help.  He is fine for a month or so and then suddenly it flares up, wouldnt a food intolerence show constantly?

Thanks

Hi Chrissy

I agree with Tohme that digestive disorders are often the result of intolerance to certain foods.  While wheat and dairy are commonly known to be triggers for reaction, so too are many others including beef, maize (corn), soya, any form of gluten and even chicken and rice - the latter being a staple ingredient of many complete foods.  TBH, the list is endless as your dog may be able to tolerate all of the foregoing but not, for eg, anything containing lamb ;)

Intolerances do not necessarily present continuously and symptoms can wax and wane.  Rather than mask the cause I would personally advise that you determine what it is either by having allergy tests done or going down the route of an exclusion diet trial.

regards, Teri :)

Dogs can be intolerant to ingredients you might not necessarily think of as well - I know of one dobe who's intolerant to fish oils, so any food with that in has to be avoided.

If you are feeding a chicken variety, try changing to the lamb one.  Chicken can make dogs (& humans:eek:) windy.

He is on the lamb one at the moment - cause we were told it may be chicken - the vet sugested something fish based, does anyone reccomend a particular brand?

thanks

Original tinned Chappie is fish-based, and both Burrns and JWB do a fish-based complete.

I agree with the others that finding the cause is more important, but as your post asked about a supplement then what about this, I use it when the dogs have been on antibiotics for any reason :)

Will a vets do allergy testing or will we need a refferal to a specialist?  think it is a good idea to definately rule it out.

Thanks

I have fed JWB for about 6 years, always the Turkey or Fish varieties.  The Lamb didn't suit my lot. May be worth trying the others. :)
