so have any of you guys had a bitch that absorbed a litter, and if so did you breed her again, did you use any sort of supplements,am umming and arring about breeding one of my big girls, homes for all pups, long waiting list, fully health tested etc,
last mating we did the Eurican injection, everything went well,we had her scanned at five weeks and we counted four pups, then nothing,so we took her for another scan and she was totally empty,we obviously put her on antibiotics etc,in case of infection, but at around the fifth week mark we lost one of our old girls, she developed a womb infection that she just was not recovering from, she was spayed and on antibiotics,am just wondering if first girl had picked anything up from her,vet thought it unlikely but my mind plays overtime, the first girl is due in season in one months time, and am just playing around/dreaming,I WANT PUPPIES
Wendy who appears to be very puppy broody at the mo
Hi Wendy
Curious to know what "the Eurican injection" is?
One of my bitches had a single pup (subsequent litter to the same dog 11) and at about 5 weeks in whelp I sadly lost one of my other dogs. Of course I could be wrong, but I really believe that the upset of the loss affected her pregnancy.

the Eurican injection is Chv injection
Sorry, Morag - still none the wiser - Chv?

Canine Herpes Virus?
A possible cause could be hypoluteidism.
We have sucessfully administered treatment with hydroxyprogesterone hexianate (depo progesterone 100mg/ml ) every 2 weeks at a dose of 8mg/kg .This appears to be extremely effective in maintaining the requisite level of post ovulation progesterone required to sustain the pregnancy. However, obviously it is necessary to monitor serum progesterone every 5 to 6 days for the period of the pregnancy.

For the first time ever, and after a lot of persuasion, I have had the CHV injection done on a pregnant bitch. I felt multiple fetuses at 3 weeks, but she is now 7 weeks and is no longer looking pregnant. I wish I had not had the injection, there was no reason really, as up to now I have always had large healthy litters. But I have heard so many horror stories recently about fading litters, that I thought it might be about time that I started getting the injection. It's probably nothing to do with the injection, but it's a mighty coincidence.
