Mine has just run out. It was afreebie on new PC. Which is a good but inexpensive one to go for? I know you can get other free ones but they only last a short while too so perhaps I should just buy one. I looked at Norton ($39.95) but was unsure as its in dollars. Should I go for something that I pay in sterling. Sorry to appear thick but just need to be sure about what i am doing.
Thanks again
Sue

I've used Norton for years and swear by it, you can get it a PCWorld or any computer shop (Argos too) and right now PCWorld have Norton Internet Security 2006 for half price.(£25.)

Whats the difference between N Antivirus and N internet security?

Internet security has extra programs for firewalls, privacy and antispam. I only use antivirus and antispyware but I have a router so my personal PC is hidden from public view. If you're exposed, your computer is directly linked to the internet then firewalls are helpful.
I use a free one (avast), I have never had any problems with it. All I need to do is every 12 mths is get a new 'key' sent to my e-mail address.
I have only ever heard bad things about Norton. My BIL who builds PC's said it slows up the computer. We did get given a free copy of Norton when we got our laptop but we just sold it on ebay as we like Avast.

I've had Norton since I had a 16 MB RAM 300 MHZ computer years ago and it''s always been fine, never slowed things down. :)

Same with me...I've had Norton and swear by it! I use all functions and run the anti-virus every week...it's saved me from no end of attacks...which I need especially now with the WiFi, all the best, Dawn

Me too, have run Norton Antivirus for years - never had a problem with it :) Consider it money well spent :)

I've got Norton and been talking to an IT techy today as
since I've installed Norton Internet Security 06 my computer
is being very slow and falling over when trying to send email.
He's suggested trying Kaspersky...
Do a google search on antivirus software and their comparison (not comparing price but efficiency) - You may well find that some of teh freebies are better than the bought.
AVG (www.grisoft.com) is one of the best rated and the one recommended by many magazines and it IS free.
Use this along with adaware and you are 'reasonably' well covered

We use Sophos at work :)

Norton makes me swear too

but for different reasons. Bought the Internet Security 2006 & have had endless problems, apparently my computer was full of viruses

. Have had Avast installed on it which seems to be doing its job so far - presumably a free one since otherwise I expect the computer shop would have charged me for it :D
The IT techy said this was good but expensive for a home user.
Kaspersky is comparable in cost to Norton.

Adaware damaged my computer so badly the hard drive had to be wiped. Same thing happened to a friend of mine.

I would go for Norton or Macafee - but whichever one you decide on you can generally get a cheap disk on ebay. I was going to spend almost £40 renewing my MacAfee online when I had a look at ebay and bought a copy for £7! It is a genuine disk and comes with a year of free updates

That one looks okay and a bargain price. is it too good to be true I ask ;)

I bought one a few months ago - it updates every day from Macafee website and basically does what it says in the tin - sorry disk. It came without a box etc and I reckon they are the ones that are supposed to be given away with new pcs that someone has somehow got hold of - anyway - it works :)

Be careful - OH bought a cheap copy of Norton on ebay. It looked completely genuine and we ran it for weeks and eventually found out (can't exactly remember how - but it was from Norton themselves) that it was a very clever fake and not protecting the PC at all.

We were happy with Mcafee but we bought it from a US site at half the price of UK sites. Now we cannot update because we have changed banks and only have a maestro card not visa and USa sites do not accept Maestro GGRRHHH

We also have Webroot spy sweeper and pop up blocker which we are very pleased with.
