Topic Dog Boards / General / My lab has just been attacked
- By goat Date 04.10.06 14:18 UTC
I have to write, I am shaking and in tears.  My darling girl has just been attacked.  I am so shocked.
I took her for a short walk to meet a friend of mine in the park.  Whilst walking down to meet her a young man was walking up with a black and tan staffordshire bull terrier that was not on the lead.  My lab was on the lead and has to be because of her TPLO surgery.  I tried to walk her away but the staffy came up to her and wham just went for her.  I did not know what to do, I could not have pulled them apart because I know that I would have been attacked.  The dog was mad, like it had a blood lust or something.  My poor girl was totally shocked and did not even retaliate just let this dog lay into her.  I shouted at the man to do something and he called his dog but it ignored him so he went and grabbed it and it was still lunging to attack mine.
I was shaking I just couldn't believe it and my poor sweet girl seemed to be alright. I shoulted at him that his dog should be on a lead and he said that it had "never done anything like that before"  I am not sure having witnessed this that I believe him.  He said he would in future walk her on a lead.  I just wanted him and his dog to get away from us and as they started walking on I noticed that mine had a puncture wound and was bleeding from her chest and her leg she had been bitten twice.
I took her straight to the vet and she is there now having anaesthetic and stitches.
I am so shaken and very sad this happened, please can somebody explain to me why this would have happened, why do people walk these dogs off the lead like that. I now have a huge bill to pay and I don't even think if I saw this man again he would pay it.  Should I file a police report what do I do?
Sorry for writing so much but it is helping to calm me down.

So so sorry to hear this. I do hope your girl is ok.
I don't know why some people are like that.
I just wish your girl has no lasting effects from her trauma.
Sending healing wishes

That is awful, I hope she is not too badly injured, I would be as upset as you.

I think you have to put this down to a nasty experience unfortunately :( Its just one of those things. Sending positive thoughts for a fast recover to your girl.

i would definately report him to the dog warden, at least this may stop it happening again. not sure the police will do anything:rolleyes: impossible to say why it happened some dogs attack for no reason and may never have done it before. was it an entire bitch? they are often the worse at starting fights.
- By Boxacrazy [gb] Date 04.10.06 14:28 UTC
I would report this to your local dog warden.
As if this dog has done this before they will know about it.

So sorry to hear about your poor girl - I had a similar experience recently although not as vicious as yours sounds - and I completely sympathise. It's heartbreaking to know that your sweet dog has had to endure something as nasty as that.:(

I'd certainly tell the dog warden and tell the police. It's unlikely that a lot can be done, but if it's happned before/or happens in the future at least there's hard evidence.

I am feeling a little calmer now and thank you all so much for helping me to feel a bit better.  I just can't believe that happened.  I am going to find out now about dog wardens in our area.

You should report this to the police in case it has happened before &/or it happens again.

Cyber {{{{{HUGS}}}}} for you & your girl

Bl**dy stupid owners words fail me now
- By Isabel Date 04.10.06 14:36 UTC
Poor thing :(  Do report it, the dog may be known to them.
- By Lori Date 04.10.06 14:39 UTC
Your poor sweet girl. This just shouldn't happen - stinking stupid people. I would definitely report him to the dog warden and the police. I hope your girl is OK both in body and mind. Healing and supportive thoughts sent your way.

Hope your girl is ok. I witnessed a black and tan staff, attack and lock on to a cavalier at the park. My friend and I managed to get it off.It was absolutely awful.
Next day,big spread in the paper, showing the cav's injuries and the police appealing for witnesses.
So I rang them, and guess what?  I was never contacted once!

This is awful, your poor girl :(
Please report it, but if it was a 'one off' like he said, then hopefully he will keep it on a lead and no more dogs will get hurt :(
<<hugs>>>

Poor girl, hope she is OK.  I do think the dogs recover from these things better than we do and it is important to be "positive" around her, just as you would around a person.  Dogs absorb and take on our emotions, I think.

Do you, or anyone else, think her recent surgery might have aggravated or frightened the other dog somehow?  I wonder because I know of a one-eyed GR that was attacked by a Lab we meet.  The GR owners felt as you do but I have met that Lab over and over for years and I was just as shocked that she did that as her owners were.

When my bitches were attacked a few years ago I immediately reported the attack to the police. (This was before dog wardens took over the responsibility) They were reluctant to do anything unless I had witnesses. The fact that I could name the dog, and it's owners, helped me. The dog owners were given a verbal warning, and the dog had to be muzzled everytime it went out. The police had no information about other dog attacks, though I knew that this dog had attacked other dogs before. I was the first to complain. If other people had complained I feel that my dogs wouldn't have ended up at the vets getting legs and thighs stitched back together again. :( Please inform the dog warden and/or the police. This may not have been the dogs first attack. Mind you, the man was breaking the law by not having it under control, or especially by not having it on a lead.

Just would like to echo what LindyLou said.  If the nitwit mother of the four year old who was attacked and bitten by another neighbours 110 lb dog (repeat FOUR YEAR OLD CHILD and 110 LB DOG) had only reported it to police perhaps the several subsequent attacks on children and small dogs could have been prevented.  Though none of the others reported their troubles either, I was the first.

I'm sorry about your lab. Poor thing has been through enough what with having TLPO already!

I would report this to your local dog warden and local police too. Even if nothing happens now at least they'll have it on record. It might possibly be of use if it happens to someone else.

Huge *hugs* for you and your doggie.

Echo what everyone else says, report it to the police & dog warden. If it can be proven (which it can) that your dog was in fact attacked by this dog then you can push for this to go further.  At the very least you should be reimbursed for your poor dogs injuries.. How awful especially after what she has been through.

Oh, your poor girl! Give her a cyber-hug from me. :-(

how awful, i hope shes home soon, love to you both.
- By munrogirl76 Date 04.10.06 20:18 UTC
So sorry to hear about your poor girl.  Hope she's OK. The owner of the other dog should be paying for the injuries his dog caused - but getting the money off him probably easier said than done unfortunately.
- By justlou Date 04.10.06 20:32 UTC
Sorry to hear this :( I hope your poor girl is going to be o.k.

{{{hugs}}} to you x

Hi

So sorry that this happened. Its really scary isnt it? I had the same thing a year ago...well almost the same I have a Staff that was attacked by a Lab. Thankfully no lasting injuries - I hope its the same for your girl :) It always gets me how casual the owners of these dogs are  Hope youre both on the road to recovery and are feeling strong enough to get out there and enjoy your walks together soon. Sox and I send huge hugs to you both (but understand if shes not up to Staffie hugs at the moment ;) )

Let us know how shes bearing up xxx
