our young bitch has overnight ate holes in our walls gnawing at the plasterboard and seems to have really enjoyed it in three places, do you think think she is lacking in something, she has had no ill affect at all , eats well and is very bright and normal, what can i put on the patches to stop her eating anymore that would be safe but not taste nice? any ideas?

It is just for the fun of chewing I think :) Best thing to do is get her crated at night :)

My Bernese, who I sorta 'inherited' from my Mother...don't ask! Regularly used to renovate the conservatory and eat her way through ALL the plaster board! She was terrible and suffered severly from seperation anxiety! However, it never seemed to do her any harm! Cost me a fortune though! I wouldn't have minded but they were rarely left on their own as I don't work! Dogs...tut, who'd 'ave 'em!? All the best, Dawn

she has been crated at night but she is now 8 months and wanted to have her loose in her bed. oh well she doesnt mind the crate so we'll just carry on.
our pups found the wall also and started licking it so have to patch it up quick smart (and no the pups aren't out of the 8 month old!!)

Labkite what food are you currently feeding her? Does she sleep with you in your room at night?If not, besides looking into her diet,this may be the best option,she may be trying to get to you. My dogs sleep in my room and i've never had any problems :)

our lab had this habit and we are still filling in holes a year after he stopped. We found that spraying some anti-chew spray on every hole stopped him pretty quickly and he hasn't done it since. I think there may be lime in plasterboard that they like the taste of.

My OES did this when he was about a year old.  I came in one day to find he had been in the understairs cupboard where his buddy sleeps and chewed a hole about 3'' across!. Weeks later he chewed a pillar in the hall on both sides - almost meeting in the middle.  I smeared Vick on it and it seemed to do the trick.  Cost me a fortune in Polyfilla.  Thank god he stopped chewing walls, only thing was he then moved onto the post that held up the bannister.  I now have a designer distressed hall.  Dogs eh - who'd have em!
