For those that have used them -
Can anyone tell me how accurate the scans are please and has anyone ever been told the bitch is pregnant when she wasnt and vice versa?
Thanks in advance

I had my peke girl scanned and was told she was in whelp, but to go back again the following week. At the 2nd scan I was told she wasnt in whelp and had probably re-absorbed. Sure enough there were no puppies. Looking back I often wonder if she was ever in whelp. The next time I decided I wouldnt scan, and she went on to have 5 healthy puppies. Not sure whether I would scan again, as I have been told that scanning can cause the bitch to re-absorb,not sure however how true that is.

I had exactly the same

1st scan,told no puppies
2nd scan 1 possbly 2
3rd scan (as she was getting huge and I didnt want to over feed her and risk huge pup )and there are 6 pups there
that she can see,I found out how many in 2 weeks time and I cant wait.

It's an Urban Myth I know a top breeder gets bitch owners to sign to say they won't scan their bitches as they(erroneously)believe the above

If it did the farmers wouldn't scan their sheep & horse breeders wouldn't scan their mares

If it caused termination of pregnancy wouldn't be used on humans either

What they do reveal is the number of bitches who conceive but then reabsorb for whatever reason. Previously they would have been thought of as missing

Most scanners will confirm pregnancy but are reluctant to state how many unless there have been problems before with big/little litters. My friend GSD in Germany had 9 healthy puppies & one stillborn her vet had got the numbers spot on

I get all my bitches scanned & they have all been 100% correct although my vet will NOT say how many pups there are unless there is only 1 just in case the bitch needs a caesar. I am just told yes or no which is good enough for me.

I get my bitches scanned too. The number seen at 28 days has always been an under-estimate but at least I know for sure that she's in whelp and can make arrangements accordingly.

hi i wouldnt have one of my bitches scanned again waste of time and money in my opionion ive tried many diffrent scanners vets sheep scanners the lot they either couldnt tell me if she was in whelp or they told me she wasnt and she was although i dont belive the scanners cause the bitch to re-absorbed

1st scan, scanned for 3 she whelped 3
2nd scan, no pups
3rd scan, 4 and she whelped 4
4th scan, 3 maybe 4 still not whelped yet so watch this space

This was done by a sheep scanner who I know people travel over 2 hours for, so she must be good

yes but i dont trust them it seems you are in a diffrent place to me as they are utter wastes of time here

I do think they are as accurate as the scanner and equipment to be honest

I have had 4 bitches scanned and my scan lady has got the numbers spot on.  She only charges £18.00. If she finds that your bitch is not in whelp she only charges £15.00.  It only takes around 1 min, no fuss, no stress.  She prefers to scan them 30 days after the last mating.
