Topic Dog Boards / Showing / Loose at the front??
- By Geeky Girl [gb] Date 24.09.06 17:07 UTC
Hello,
Please can somebody help me with a few showing terms. Somebody has told me that my 6 month pup is "loose at the front" and has "weak pasterns" (sp??). What do these terms mean, how are they caused and what can I do to help him not have these problems (if they are problems??)
Thanks in advance
GG

Hi GG, you don't say what breed your puppy is, but it's very normal, in most breeds, for 6 month old pups to be loose in front and everywhere else. At 6 months they are just babies that will take time to mature and tighten up, all over.

One of my breeds is the Irish Setter, and at 6 months they seem to have no co-ordination, the legs are flailing about all over the place when they move. Very loose in front.

Pasterns also take time to strengthen, road walking helps, but you should never over excercise a puppy. You can't rush maturity, so you shouldn't try. It'll come with time.

Thanks nursey

He is a Border Collie, if that helps??

I though that it was something that I had done to him, the way that they told me - why can't they just say he is a bandy legged toddler and it will be fine ;-).

The majority of his walks are on pavements but he doesn't do too much exercise
