My granddaughter went for her first scan today, everything was going fine until they told her that she is 0 negative blood group, and will be more prone to maybe have a miscarriage, have any of you got this blood group and what advice can you give us. I only know what was done years and years ago (babies used to have tranfusions I think) but I know things have progressed from there, she has been told that she will need extra scans and other treatment her due date has been given as round about 7th April next year. Advice would be most welcome as we have a very worried youngster here now. Neither her mum or myself have been through anything like this.
My other daughter had her scan today(15 mins between them) as well everything is fine with her and her due date is 28th March next year.

Hi - are they saying she has the antibody problem? Where her blood type is incompatible with the baby?

Not sure if O negative is anything different (my daughter is O negative) - but I'm A negative and din't have any problems with having my two. Just a small prick on the babies heel when they are born to identify whether they are +ve or -ve and then a jab for me :( :( :D :D I'm sure that if she attends regularly for all her checks she should be OK :)

JG's message has just reminded me that I didn't need the jab after either (daughter is -ve, so son is probably -ve too)

I'm also rhesus negative (A neg, not O neg though). I was told that first babies are at no risk whatever their own blood group, but if that baby is rhesus positive then at birth it can 'inoculate' the mother which will make her form antibodies for future Rh+ foetuses, who were known as 'blue babies' and often needed a blood transfusion. However nowadays they test the baby's blood at shortly after birth and if there could be a problem next time the mother's given an injection to prevent it. I don't know if any of that applies to your granddaughter though. What blood group is her husband? Is the baby likely to be Rh+?

yep, I am 0 negative (but, I have positive antibodies) (supposed to wear a warning bracelet)... 1st child very healthy 8lb 2oz birth easy (half hour) and no problems.... 2nd child, blue, revived (3times in total)... incubated, hole in heart, now a very healthy 29year old

Me too O neg, first child wont count. after that babies tested if they are rhesus positive, you need an anti D injection, if they are also rhesus negative doesn't matter. This is to happen soon as possible after the delivery. I had 2 positives and 1 negative.
It means also that your grandaughter is a 'universal donor' and her blood is highly desirable as it is the only type that can be transfused to any other group.

I am O Neg, too. I have 3 very healthy kids (one now a father, one due to be a mother in April) My first 2 were by my 1st husband who was also O Neg, so no problems at all. My 3rd child was by my 2nd husband who was O Pos. No problems at all, but I was given an injection once she was born to counteract any antibodies. You really should find out what blood group the babies father is. She may not need any medical help.

I have AB negative blood and my ex had positive blood. In order to prevent any future babies being born *blue* I was given an injection (Anti D) after the birth and also after the next 2 births.
However, Stephen is also AB negative so the problem didn't arise with Sophie and Conor..
I had to have more blood tests than is usual as they keep an eye on the antibodies :)
