I am making so much progress with my dog (puli) - well really he is making progress with me. I have been convinced all along that he was dog agressive and would tear them all to shreds and he could never be let off a lead. He along with various dog owners, a trainer and now a training school have managed to convince me he isnt dog agressive. We have let him off lead on our walks and parks and he has behaved beautifully - can even get him to do a distance down stay. He has also sat and watched dogs walk past, horses walk past - no problems. We have let him off lead to run and play in a big park area - he comes back when called, if we hide, change direction - but if we see another dog have put a muzzle on him - being cautious! He still doesnt like other dogs jumping at him and will bark and tell them off. Last night at training we had to do an off lead walk towards all the other dogs - he stayed focused on me and didnt go near the others, down stays off lead and walking all round the area - he didnt move, and me disappearing through into another area him being let off lead and coming to me. He did all this without a problem -Is he ready to be allowed off lead unmuzzled in a park??

Can you do a 'test run' with some friends first to be sure? How about off lead but with muzzle just in case? Has he ever gone for other dogs in the past, to make you think he might have been aggresive? Sounds like you're making great progress with him anyway. :-)

You will know when you are ready to let him have free reign. Have a couple of walks wheres hes off for say 5 mins then build up yours and his confidence by allowing more time. You might feel safer with him wearing the muzzel to begin with off lead and will give you that confidence as you will know he wont beable to bite if he does meet other dogs. If you can meet some friends with bomb proof dogs then that would be great as he will learn doggie social skills ;) whilst being closley observed by you. Remember if you have confidence in his abilities he will have the same in you. Good luck

Thanks - I've done one muzzled off lead and we saw a couple of dogs which he ran up to and barked - but an excited bark, and ran away and stopped as if to say come and play - the one he chose tried to run managed one step and had to give up because it was too elderly. The other one he didnt bark at whatsoever and wanted to play but the owner told me off for putting him in a muzzle and proceeded to give me a lecture. I politely gave up - put him on the lead - took the muzzle off and carried on. I think I'll find a willing volunteer first - not sure how - the people I know with dogs are at the caravan site and you have to keep them on their lead - I only let him off lead on the beach when I cant see anybody. Still its coming to the end of the season and there arent too many people around now - maybe we'll be able to give it a go... I shut my eyes and hope for the best dont I?

You are doing what you think is best for your dog so please dont take any notice of people telling you off for your dog wearing a muzzle, If it happens again i would just walk on and carry on with your walk. We all have to start somewhere and people like this are not worth talking to IMO. Dont let this stop you letting your dog off lead with or without the muzzle. Are there any training groups locally where you can go to? some people might even meet up for walks, my group used to meet before class and we would all have a walk around the feilds before we started and the dogs were all off lead having lots of fun, however the class had to move premises when the land got sold and where we are now its not suitable for the dogs to be off lead so it we dont do that anymore :(
