Someone on another board is trying to get an idea of the amount of horses destroyed within the racing industry per year. As you can imagine this is quite a closed book - but I gather there are 3 slaughterhouses serviced by Newmarket trainers alone. A percentage do go on to be broodmares and some do end up in rescue/rehab centres (there are a couple donated purely to ex-racers) but some are given away free or PTS.

Anyone got any ideas how to get such information?

Probably already thought of and discounted, but how about one of the big horse rescue societies? ILPH perhaps?
Would the BHS know at all?

A lot of lesser race horses end up being sold abroad. if you go to any of the cheaper sales at Newmarket and Doncaster ther are loads of buyers from Italy,Russia,Kasakstan etc. Doesn't bear thinking about the life they have out there.

One of the horses we sold went to Cheq republic, he was named and then never heard of again,:-( shame as he was a nice looking horse although too big for racing, would have made a great police horse we always said (and the only horse i've ever known to eat shavings like straw!!)

Don't know numbers as there probably aren't any offcial figures for slaughter, only lists of deaths at Weatherby's, but there are 3,000 foals born in Britain and Ireland for the industry each year. How many TB's do you see around??

i have experience of the racing in CZR & can confirm that their animals are extremely well looked after.

How?

where will she be able to get figures from? she could tell you how many go through her hands but not through slaughter houses.

I would like to correct my foal total above. It isn't 3000 it's more like 30,000. Almost 3000 catlogued at Tattersalls for the sales starting next week
