Hi i wonder if anyone can help. I had my bitch spayed today and picked her up at 3.30.       
Since being home she has not stopped crying and pacing where she can't get comfortable. She does seem to be in a great deal of pain. I would very much like to know if this is normal??

Not in my limited experience. I've only had two bitches spayed, both for pyometra. Although both had been quite ill beforehand they were settled and well after the op, and didn't seem to be in any pain. In fact both of them were looking for their dinners that evening.

If I were you I'd give the vet a ring.

I've had quite a few spayed over the years and never had one do that.  I would give the vet a ring.
Have you got any painkillers for her?

Hi. When i went to pick her up i was given painkillers but told not to give to her any till tommorrow. Am thinking perhaps give her half now and see how it goes.

I wouldn't do that. If something is going wrong giving painkillers will only mask it. If I were you I'd ring the vet.

If the vet said don't give until tomorrow then DON'T.  It is quite possible that she has been given 24 hours worth of NSAIs during the operation and it would be dangerous to give more until prescribed to do so.  As she seems to be unusually uncomfortable compared to most peoples experience I would be speaking to the vet.

If you were told to give them to her tommorow then I wouldn't give them tonight as she will have had a long acting pain killing injection.
Definatly ring the vet.  Advice over the phone is free and they will tell you if they feel its anything to worry about.

Cindy was spayed a fortnight ago and besides being dopy no side affects she didn't seem to be uncomfortable except with lampshade on

Bit late for advice now as I presume you have been on to the Vet by now or your little girl has settled down by now.  About 4 months ago one of my bitches was spayed with a Pyo.  She was in a lot of discomfort (never expereienced this to happen before). I had the Rimadyl prescribed but knew that she had already had her pain killing injection before leaving the Vets.  Luckily my Vet telephoned me about 10.30pm (he hadn't done the operation so was just checking to see how she was when he heard about her), told him that she seemed to be in a lot of pain and he told me to give her a Rimadyl. Everything then settled down, she just seemed to need that boost.  However, I certainly would not have given this tablet without the advice of my Vet. Hope she had a good night but if you have any concerns then your Vet has to be the first port of call.  Good luck.

I know my girl was very 'down' after being spayed :( in fact she took longer to get over it than the two other major ops she had that year. We weren't given any pain killers to take home, and she wouldn't eat until late next evening and only a small amount then.

Yes i rang the vets that night and was told to give her half of the pain killer and that if there was no change bring her in in the morn.
The painkiller didn't really make any difference and she was still crying in the morning.
I took her into the vets who explained that all dogs like humans have different pain thresholds.
Anyway, they gave me codine for her to take along side the other tablet and that did the trick, she was a bit stiff and still a little sulky but not in the pain she was previously.
She had got her normal appetite back within 24 hours also.
The vets words to describe her were, "a bit of a drama queen"
Yep, i can't disagree with that one!
Still, always better to be safe than sorry.

Need some advice please.
I'm taking my Boxer into be spayed at the end of the month.  The reason I'm having her spayed is that she has been fighting with another of my bitches (always the same one) over stupid things. (e.g the hover, me feeding them) the vet has said it's hormonal and the best thing is to have her spayed.

Has anyone ever experience this behaviour from their bitches?

Many of us have had fighting bitches -but really spaying makes no difference I'm afraid. Bitches tend to fight very seriously and when it gets really out of hand saldy the only solution is to keep them permanently separated or to rehome one of them. :( My worst bitch ever for fighting, and it was always she who started it and caused serious injury to the other, was spayed.

Yes.  My cocker was getting nasty with my, already spayed, terrier, generally leading up to a season but at odd other times when she felt too much attention was going her way.  I had her spayed, for other reasons really, and the scraps disappeared.  So I would say you can have real optimism that it will help but I'm not sure it can be guaranteed.

I hope it works, I couldn't rehome her or the other bitch.  Fingers crossed aye. :-(
