I am thinking of getting a Malmute and am wondering what they are like as a familly pet.

They are called MalAmutes :) They are hairy - VERY hairy and shed twice a year ...they can be noisey (though I know of some quiet ones) , they needs lots and lots of exercise .......on lead or on a rig or a bike ...

They need to go to training classes, they need to be with a family who all know what they are taking on

They need a completely enclosed garden ..with a 6' fence

They need lots of love from people who have the time, energy and commitment

And they will give back the love a thousand fold :) I have 3 and they are all very good with my children and my Grandchildren ..but I am always careful as they are big dogs and can be very clumsy, not a breed for anyone who isn;t 100% commited

Lots of puppy farmers of Malamutes around, please be very careful ...a good breeder will use stock that has been health tested (hips and eyes), the mum will be over 2 years of age. You will be asked to meet with the breeder before you are promised a pup. You WILL be asked to sign a contract. The pups WILL be sold with endorsements. The breeder will offer lifelong help and advice to you and will ask for you to retunr the pup to them if anything should go wrong

Don' buy an Alaskan Malamute puppy from a free ads page on the net ...

If you are able to travel to Newark Showground this weekend, we are having our Championship Show and you will be able to meet many Malamutes and their families :) Most of the top breeders will be there and you will be able to discuss the breed and ask lots of questions. Please don't think that because you want "just a pet" that show breeders won't be interested in selling to pet homes or that they are too expensive, in fact many puppy farmers charge more than the top breeders! If you could make it, we'd be happy to see you :)

Have you decided against getting a Dogue de Bordeaux?  The two breeds are totally different in every respect.  Just being nosey but why are you now interested in a Malamute rather than a DDB?

I found a nice breader for a DDB, i have spoke to them a couple of times and they seem to be really good but they don't have any pups until the end of next year, so i am going to wait until then to get one. I saw a Malamute on the weekend and it was adorable and thought i would make some enquires about them.

Malamutes are not an easy breed and you really must do extensive research before you consider getting one. You would probably be better off spending the year researching DDB's and getting ready for your pup

Waiting lists for a good. well bred Malamute can be 12-18 months once you have met the breeder
