hello
i'm new to this site but does anyone have any top tips on grass our 10mth male dobe is wrecking our garden .we have countless bald patches on the grass and most of the shrubs are burnt .I thought it was female urine that burnt the grass any tips or recomendations please, thanks
- By Lois_vp [gb] Date 21.08.02 08:16 UTC
Hi Steve,
We have had the same problem with our two (male) dogs. But it seems that it is something that only happens when they're young. Our elder one's urine no longer burns the grass at all.
The best thing you can do is to be ready with a watering can each time and give the 'piddled' area a good dousing. It's a bit of a nuisance but worth the effort.

Hi Liz

Same problem here - 10 month Dobe burns the grass, dog was my idea, grass was the old man's idea :) :) Oh well, ho hum. I have found though in recent times that the boy is getting more and more keen on his "little soldier" and therefore we can get away with more :D :D

What's your boy's name and where did you get him???? I hope for your sake he's not the Mockodile's brother ;)

hi Beth,
The boys name is Murphy we got him in Manchester , we're pretty new to this game , acouple of Ellidobes and a couple of Isadobes and one or two Dobenars in the pedigree -any relations? How are you getting on with your boy ,is this your first dobe ?we're having a bit of a rebellion at the moment he doesn't want to do what we tell him and if we see another dog !!!! hold on to your arm sockets .Its nice to hear from another dobe owner we don't see many around --probably all in the house nursing sore arms !

Hi Liz
How am I getting on ?????? Well, if you put the search word "Mockodile" in the search facility on here, you'll probably be able to read a whole catalogue of nonsense. But if you really want to know all the mares I've had, feel free to mail me (maill addy - click on my profile :) ) These poor pepes on here have already heard it (and lived thru most of it !!!!!! :D :D )

I think that Eoghania mentioned somewhere that tomatoes can stop urine patches in the garden.....as in feeding them to your dog that is , not wiping the grass with them :D

Does your dogs like Toms?

he'lleat anything thatis not nailed down!
- By Melodysk [gb] Date 21.08.02 10:03 UTC
:)

Hudson has tomatoes in his diet every now and again and since the addition he doesnt seem to leave burnt patches ..could be worth a try possibly? Hudson is 8 and a half months old (Malamute)

Hi Liz

*IF* your boy was born on 9th October last year then to answer Beth's question - he is not related to the Mockodile.

(Just for an exercise for me - if that was his birth date then let me know his colour and first letter of his pedigree name and I will see if I can work out who he is although if he is brown and his name pet name is vaguely related to his pedigree name then I think I might know)

With regard to burning patches on the grass. This is the only "problem" I have found since I changed my lot to raw feeding - they don't drink so much and sometimes mark the grass - following behind with a bucket of water is the best option. As soon as he starts cocking his leg then try to encourage him to use a specific post or tree rather than any bush or shrub in the garden (or they will go brown as well)

hiya Christine ,you are spooky ! yes he was born on the9th of october , the first letter of his pedigree is G-he is black and tan. How did you know ?Have you got a brother or a sister ? Or do you know the mother and father ? I'm very intrigued
you're going to think i'm really stupid (just looked up your details and looked on your website )beautifull dogs , I'd still be interested in any information you have on him though
thanks Liz
- By Kerioak Date 21.08.02 13:47 UTC
Hi Liz

Guinness Guy?

Not really spooky - I am a genealogist with over 295K Dobes in my database and one of the affix's (wrongly spelt :-) ) you mentioned was unusual enough for me to find enough to work with along with the age of 10 months. Other than his pedigree I don't know anything personal about him or his family

My Dyson has just ceased to work :( so instead of finding other housework to occupy my time decided to exercise my mind/computer instead.

Hi Christine , since I read your post I did some searching I looked on the Dobenar site what a coincidence , we called him murphy by chance ,he had already been called Basil (I couldn't shout that down the field ) I also looked on your site ,our lad looks very like the dog on your homepage. Thanks for the intrest we are the dreaded novices so anyone with any experience of dobes is utterly facinating to us(I am a novice with the computer as well so I'll try to improve my spelling and get to grips with the little faces)
thanks Liz
ps he's great black night guiness guy is his brother from what I remember
- By Kerioak Date 21.08.02 16:17 UTC
What's wrong with Basil !!!!!

One of my girls is called Fennel - we mated her to Herb (said with a French accent so it is more like erbe) and one of the daughters is called Sage.

The kennel name that rang bells with me was Ellidob

Apple Cider Vinegar added to drinking water has the same effect as feeding tomato juice and can reduce the brown patches. :)
- By steve [gb] Date 23.08.02 22:08 UTC
thanks ,we've just started giving him tomatoes but if that doesn't work we'll try the vinegar (how much ?) Can't he just have cider (save on the shopping ----only joking )
- By Lara Date 24.08.02 20:45 UTC
I put a couple of tablespoons full into a bowl of drinking water - you can also just mix it in with food :)
- By steve [gb] Date 25.08.02 12:29 UTC
thankyou

hi,
If your dog has the run of the garden ,train him to use a certain allocated area.
We use to have a GSD who would only use her own toilet area, if she was out for a walk she would wait until she got home .
- By steve [gb] Date 25.08.02 14:37 UTC
hiya we,ve tried that .when we first got him he was confined to a concreted area but now he will wait and wait and doesn't care where he goes so Ithink we'll try the tomatoes and wine vinegar but thanks for the suggest

- By Salem [gb] Date 25.08.02 17:20 UTC
Hi Liz
We had the same thing until Salem learnt to cock his leg - then he prefered to use a particular part of the fence! (right next door to neighbours grape vine! Neighbours have commented on excellent grapes this year LOL :D) Before that we just waited for him to go and gave the area a quick squirt with the hose and that seemed to work ok.
Salem is 2 years old (next Saturday :)). Black & tan Dobe. Our new arrival is Dizzy who is a Brown & tan, 10 weeks old and runs him a right dance LOL! - but you do forget things even though it's only been such a sort time since Salem was small.
How is this for OTT - we have organized a birthday BBQ for him, party hats (he wore one last year too LOL) and birthday cake with candles, and lots of prezzies wrapped up in secret so that he doesn't know what he is getting :D Neighbours think we are mad but all enjoy the excuse for a really good night in!
- By steve [gb] Date 25.08.02 17:35 UTC
Hello salem,Thanks for the reply ,we've started the tomatoes and dousing down with water.Happy birthday to your boy and I've read abit about your new arrival -congrats . It will take me a while to get up to speed with all your dogs and the abbreveations (whats LOL)? sorry but i'm dead thick and it has to be spelled S__L__O__W__L__Y (and an explanation would be helpfull !!!_no big words !!!)the faces are just going to have to wait !!
thanks
LIZ
- By Salem [gb] Date 25.08.02 17:53 UTC
Hi Liz
Cheers! and no you are not being thick - it took me ages to get the hang of it all :D
LOL = Laugh out loud
ROFL= Rolling on the floor laughing
Also a useful hint - try not to use capitals because people think you are shouting (I did it the first time Lol :))
Congrats on the Dobe - I know I'm biased, but they really are fab dogs!
best wishes
Sharon :)
- By steve [gb] Date 25.08.02 18:04 UTC
Thanks Sharon ,biased is good ! He's great ,having spoke to bethN he sounds very like her Mockodile and having read some of the old posts it sounds like we've had a lot of the same problems at about the same stages ,so I've taken alot of comfort from that. Its been hard going at times but worth it
take care

Hi Liz
10 months old is not a good age for Dobe boys LOL :D but they do grow out of it!! I keep telling Beth but I'm not sure she believes me LOl! Luckly, although Salem was awfull sometimes (he ripped up the landing carpet three days before we were due to move!:D) mostly he has always been very easy going. Now our young miss is going to be a handful!!!!!!! by about a year you will see an improvement -Mock seems so funny - his antics have us in stitches!

- By steve [gb] Date 25.08.02 18:28 UTC
Sharon 'as I said to Beth it's nice to know someone else is in the same boat .I wish I'd found this site earlier .Murphy has his own catalogue of events some too painfull to remember! I swear some days his head spins!!I will watch your young girls progress with interrest ( mind you --you have the benefit of this being the second one , a bit like kids really !! you practise with the first !!
take care
LIZ
- By Salem [gb] Date 26.08.02 11:16 UTC
Hiya
Like you said - you THINK you know more with the second BUT nature has a terrible way of making you forget how awful it really was! LOL :D ( now is that kids or dogs??:D)

- By BethN [us] Date 25.08.02 19:37 UTC

- By BethN [us] Date 25.08.02 19:38 UTC
Ummmm sheepish. two "moths" is obviously two months but after a copious amount of wine !!!!!!!!!!!LOL
- By steve [gb] Date 25.08.02 20:01 UTC
Beth ,
Early on parade ! Getting ready for the hols eh !! If Murphs improves at 12mths you'll be able to hear the wizzers and gongs from one end of the country to the other .Have a good one ,not too much metaxa !
Liz
- By Salem [gb] Date 26.08.02 11:24 UTC
What is Metaxa??? I'm soooo sad - I really need to get out more :D Thought it said Metexa - which is also a Dobermann line! (Dizzy's Gparents, ggparents, gggparents & ggggparents are all Metexa's) See, I'm a mine of useless information! LOL Really have to get out - If I can just wriggle out of this nice white coat they seem to insist I must wear! :D

- By steve [gb] Date 26.08.02 17:04 UTC
