I have just discovered (after doing a Google search) what I think is harvest mites.  I found a few bright orange dots on her stomach and after searching found more between her toes and on her legs.  She isn't itching because she is being treated for what the vet thought was a grass allergy.  So I know it will be another trip to the vets, but I was just wondered has anyone elses dog had harvest mites? and how was it treated?   We are also hoping she is having pups(early stages, but fingers still crossed!), so that may effect what treatment she can have.  Any help would be great.

One of mine had a problem with harvest mites. It took a while for us to realise what it was at first. She came up in what looked like lumps all over her body (it was a reaction to the harvest mites). The vet gave us frontline to see if that would help but it didn't work so back we went and that was when he discovered what it was and gave us a cream to put on her I can't remember what it was called sorry. Like your dog she had red dots between her toes and on her belly. We have moved since then and have had no problems where we are now as we are further away from fields, where as before we lived right next to them.

Hi, Em was diagnosed with harvest mites last week. Unfortunatly she is v. itchy so for that we have piriton. For the harvest mites we were told there is not much available apart from frontline spray. She doesnt like the spray so we have to open the bottle & rub it on. Vet says to use approx half the bottle. Hope this helps.

Thanks for you reply Jenny.  We live in the country, on an old farm, so surrounded by fields!  We've only recently moved, so will be staying put for quite a while.  At least now I know what it is hopefully it will be easily treated and I'll know what it is if she starts itching again next summer.

No chance of avoiding them then. We are due to move again next month so fingers crossed we won't be near fields again. It should start to get better next month for her.

An effective deterent, we found, was a little brush of tea tree oil over the feet but I can't remember if that is safe in pregnancy, best to check with your vet whatever you decide to try.

"Advocate", available from the vet, is indicated in the treatment of harvest mites.  There are probably other treatments out there but that is one I know of.  You will need to get it from the vet anyway, so you can check whether it is safe in pregnancy with him/her.

Went to the vets this morning, he gave me something to bathe her with.  I have to lather it up and not fully wash it out.  So at this moment she is running round the garden like a loony, all wet and soapy!  He said harvest mites appear every year in the middle of July and disappear about the 10th September, and that all dogs react diiferently, some tear their hair out and others aren't too fussed.  Josie isn't too fussed.  Thanks for the replies, hopefully we'll be rid of them soon.

Hello,

Poppy has just been seen by the vet because of continual itching - I'd not seen any fleas at all but was going to ask for a supply of Frontline. However the vet said it wouldn't help the problem as it's harvest mites. He gave Poppy an injection and said it will stop the itching.Just reading the forums here and seeing that most people have used Frontline spray for the problem - and I actually went there to purchase Frontline :-) I suppose different vets have different ideas. Thing is I've also been bitten! and feel
itchy :-(so I hope he's right about this and it goes away pronto!!

(Poppy also has been chewing her paws & he examined them very well).

The vet did also say that it would all be over by October so here's hoping.

Best wishes,
Poppys Mum & Poppy
