I was wondering if anyone could give me a bit of advice.  I have a 10 year old collie cross bitch who has been suffering with bladder stones, we have her on a special S/D diet and this does help to clear the crystals up.  However as she is 10 years old, I am a little concerned that the diet she is on will not be complete with all the full nutrients that a senior dog needs.

Obviously the most important thing is for Cleo to be on this diet to get rid of the Crystalls and to keep her clear, however I was wondering whether I would be able to give her Vetyme once a day vitamin pills or whether this could affect her problem with the bladder stones.

Any advice on this matter would be greatly appreciated as I know that when you have a dog with this problem it is important to not give them anything other than the diet.

Thanks

What kind of stones are they? As I understand it, the treatment varies according to the mineral the stones are composed of. I found this article on the net which might help; there are masses of pages about canine bladder stones!

One of my hounds has suffered struvite bladders stones in the past. After the 1st op to remove them, the vet prescribed S/D for 12 weeks after that C/D.  About a year later she started to produced struvite stones again. She had another op to remove them, back onto S/D again for 12 weeks.  During this period I met a VET from New Zealand, he suggested I try cider vinegar/tomotoes.  That was 4 years ago. Seems to have worked for her.

Well that is good to know, thanks very much for your reply.  Do you use any specific cider vinegar?

Thanks again

Aspall Organic cyder vinegar, most supermarkets stock it. Sainsbury's do.  You can also get it from Holland and Barrett.

My dad took cyder vinegar to dissolve gall stones and it was so successful that they cancelled his operation as he no longer needed it. He continues to take it daily and has had no recurrence so I can state it definitely works for humans :)

Bliss is fed twice a day. I use a capful in each meal.  (about 20ml day)  She is 29 kilos.
You will probably need to introduce it gradually until she gets used to the taste.
