I have just aqquried a nice old antique leather chesterfield, but it seems the previous owner was a heavy smoker & frankly it stinks of fags Does anyonehave any ideas of how to get rid of the smell? its banished to the stable until it smells sweeter

Diluted white vinegar should get rid of it try 1 part vinegar to 4 parts water.  Also worth a try if that doesnt work johnsons baby wipes I use them daily on my leather suite.

thanks. Have started with vinegar & moved on to tack cleaner. normally a bottle of leather tack cleaner last me a whole hunting season but I have already used a whole bottle on ths sofa!! I have now discovered that what at 1st looked like nice patina you get on vintage leather chairs, was vintage nicotine stain  about 40 years worth of nicotine in fact. its totally disgusting & having spent several hour cleaning it today, I now smell like a smoker too!! I have ordered some liquidleather to see if that helps. if anyone else has further ideas i would be grateful...apart from putting a match to it that is!!

I have been washing my leather suite, not that it has ever seen a smoker :), with soapy water for over 20 years and it's survived that very well so you could try giving it a wash to get the layers of nicotine off and then finish with something nurishing.

I must admit to just washing my leather suite down with the mop and flash in a bucket - same as you do for the floor! My dogs sit on the furniture, so it really needs to be cleaned every day (more so on a day like this)- it would cost a fortune in liquid leather or similar.

I used to clean my leather sofa with baby lotion.  Came up great and had that lovely smell.

I suspect vegetable oil would do the job efficiently and cheaper than posh tack spray - save the tack spray for when you have got teh nicotine off - or if its REALLY good quality leather (and knowing you Sam i bet it is! :)  ) warm water adn washing up liquid, then the saddle soap or leather balm.

Wonder if THIS could be the use for the  'scented leather balm' (sandlewood, vanilla, something else i forget what) that the saddlery suppliers were trying to flog me last week. And there was me saying 'but WHY would i want dog collars and bridles that smell of vanilla.... leather smells lovely as it is....

i use baby wipes with aloavera in them, the muck that comes off the sofa is disgusting.
