Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / Licking new pup

Hi everyone

We have Toby (neutered aged 10) & JJ (aged 2 entire)  Now we also have Georgie (she's aged 9 weeks)

Anyway we've had her for 6 days and Toby has just started licking her almost obsessively, he doesn't stop for breath hardly!  He's not aggressive with her at all he, it's just this licking.  JJ's been fine and is carrying on with his normal routine.

Any ideas on why Toby would be doing this and also should i stop him?  I must admit i have when it seems like it's getting to much for her or when she wants a nap.

Thanks everyone in advance :-)

My mother's old dog used to lick one of mine obsessively (mainly her ears, but also her bottom) until she was dripping wet. We used to have to separate them before he made her sore. No idea why he picked on her and none of the others.

I would agree with JG and seperate, it won't do the pup any good to be licked so much, even the pup's mum would not so vigarously clean and wet a pup.

My brothers GSD once licked one of my guinea-pigs like this, the guinea-pigs just used to run all over him, but then he would hold one down and just lick it until it was sopping wet, (I could have rung him out like a piece of wet washing.)

He obviously likes the pup, which is good, but as JG says it could make her sore, and cold too.

Thanks :-)

I must say Toby did this with JJ for a couple of days when we got him, but he started on the day we brought him home.  We didn't think he was going to do it this time until yesterday when he started a little bit and went on from there.

I have been seperating them today so she can have a rest and be dry, it seems to have done Toby good as well as when they are brought back together he's not doing it.

I should be used to dogs behaviour really but i'm always wary when bringing a new pup into the house and try and make the experience good for the other dogs here.

Well, it isn't a bad thing, it shows he is accepting her, as he accepted your previous dog. ;-)

I truthfully don't understand why some male dogs do this, a pup usually licks the mouth of an adult for food, and in a pack the lesser dogs will always lick the mouth/face of an Alpha dog/bitch to show they accept them as the Alpha.  But why some male dogs will sodden a pup or guinea-pig :-D  I don't understand.

My mum's terrier x will lick and lick something to weaken it, so that she can then rip it open (hence a cushion) but it is not for that reason don't worry.

I can't understand the benefit of doing it or what it means, apart from acceptance. Glad they are all getting along well, he sounds to be a good father figure.

my male dog would lick the cat relentlessly which i thought was sweet, but unfortunately he has a very large tongue and the cat was old and thin and didnt weigh much and the action of him licking her would drag her along the floor which she got fed up with after a while.

Toby is lovely, a real gent, he loves people, other dogs and cows :D

Now you've mentioned a father figure well i think your right, if Georgie or JJ do anything wrong as in take shoes etc Toby will bark at them as if he's telling them off or he will come and get myself or OH.  You see he was a perfect pup and didn't chew or misbehave at all....well i know didfferent but i think thats his outlook on it all :D
