unfortunately my old hen has died this morning. I half expected it as she had not been her usual self, but was still eating, and running when the food appeared. However my mum says that you have to notify someone if a chicken dies. Is this true, and if so whom? Advice appreciated. I have one chicken remaining and one duck, who are bright and healthy.

If you need to notify anyone I would imagine it would be DEFRA.  You could give them a ring on their help line and find out.
Very sorry you have lost your chicken, how old was she?

Sorry your hen's died - I like hens; they have a great social structure within a small flock.

I imagine your mum's thinking of the avian flu scare earlier this year where any unexpected poultry deaths were to be notified to Defra. Your vet would probably know if that applies to your circumstances.

Not sure how old she was. She never really laid much, and had been de-beaked,bless her.The last few days she has just sunned herself for most of the day, but was still eating. She had free-range of 2 acres for the last few years, and the often use to come into the lounge! Yes they are amazing characters. Spoke to vet, and after explaining it all, they felt I could bury her at home.Wont be having anymore, have just the chicken and duck, who have now both lost their partners, the fox took my duck. However they have become inseperable, which is nice.
