Sam had a nasty lumpy sore on his leg which seemed to appear overnight. I took him to the vet as he wouldn't leave it alone, I guessed it was a sting or something. Well before I knew it he was having another op. I felt so bad subjecting him to yet another op as I hadn't given it a chance to heal by itself. Well the vet just phoned with the results of the biopsy and it was a histiocytoma(sp) a benign tumour. She said it was nothing to worry about but of course I am worrying. She said it could be a one off but he could get a cluster of them so we need to keep an eye on him. He is only 2 1/2 so fingers crossed he won't get anymore. Has anyone had experience of these lumps before.

One of my daughter's bitches has just had a lump removed from the back of her neck. It came up very quickly. The vet was mystified as the lump is fibrous, with long roots going down between her shoulder blades and he's never seen anything quite like it before in this position. I was just falling to sleep the other night and it came to me in a flash. It's right on the site of her microchip. Sure enough, we took her back to the vets next day, and the microchip has gone. We haven't had the results back yet but the vet is certain the microchip will be in the middle of the lump.

One of my dogs has a lump between his shoulder blades as well, it appeared last Autumn.   I had the vet examine it and she said it was a plugged hair follicle.  So I left it alone and it's still there, maybe very slightly larger.  I am totally convinced it is the microchip - but the vet completely dismissed the idea.  Betcha she is wrong.

My husband absolutely refuses to put him through surgery.. hence I've left it alone, but will ask again this year for his annual check up.

Sam had a lump removed 18 months ago from his neck, it turned out to be a Hygroma which sounds similar to what you describe. The vet thinks it could of come up on an injection site as he'd just had an operation. The vet told me not to microchip him as knowing Sams luck it might cause problems. I'd be interested in the results of the tests on your daughters dog.

She's going back to the vet today and we should have the results, I'll let you know.

Ange,

One of my dogs had a flat, weird looking large lump that suddenly appeared on a front leg, right behind her "knee."  I noticed it when I was grooming her.  Took her to the vet and he advised surgery because of the location.  If it was cancerous removing enough tissue around it would be impossible, plus healing would be a problem because of the location.

Anyway, I booked her in for the operation a week later, took her there that morning and an hour later the vet called to say he did not want to do the surgery because the lump had shrunk slightly.  He gave me a topical cream and the lump disappeared by itself in a few weeks.  It was a histiocytoma.    She has not had another one since.  She's three years old, btw.

Anyway, don't worry.

Thats interesting Stacey. I just wonder now if the lump would of disappeared of its own accord. I do think that some vets do rush to operate though but I suppose better to know as soon as possible. Sam is having his stitches out on sunday. I'm glad your dog has not any anymore lumps. Thanks for reassuring me.

My Rosie had a Histiocytoma on her ear, a nasty lump which appeared over night.  Thankfully my vet knew what it was straight away, said it was probably best to leave it a while to see if it would go on it's own.  Rosie scratched it which made it bleed, but I continued to clean it with hibiscrub and 5 weeks later it was completely gone, no surgery needed.  She's not had any more since.

My vet did say 'most' of the time they will go on their own, but some do need removing surgically.

Daughters bitch has been back to the vet. The microchip isn't in the lump, but the vet still can't find it. The lump has a very long name that my daughter can't remember, but has tracked up from the spinal column. The vet says this indicates a foreign object close to the spine. She's being x rayed on Monday to see if it's the missing microchip, (too deep for the scanner to pick up).

I have just had my dog at the vets tonight as he has two lumps about the size of a pea..... one on his back and one on his side.......
The vet has looked at them and told me to leave them alone for a month and see what they do.... She thinks that they may be histiocytomas and that they will either grow or go away on their own.
They are not really bothering him...... they are bothering me more !!!

So, we will wait and see how they are doing in 4 weeks time.......
