Hi All
I have already posted today about dogs sleeping in conservatorys but have just got 1 other post, i currently have a 3 1/2 year old westie called Hamish and am about to get a new puppy in 2 weeks time, we are currently sorting out where to sleep them both as Hamish sleeps in the utility room at the moment, the other option is the conservatory. My concern is that my brother and dad work nights and 1 comes in at 4.30am and the other around 5.30am, if the 2 boys sleep in the utility room which is near the front of the house and the pup hears them come in will this start him off whining? Hamish is as good as gold and does not make a sound when they come in at the moment but i think if the puppy starts that he too will start whining, he does not like to hear any strange noises and i think that the pup whining is going to start him off aswell, he is the sort of dog that reacts quite badly to noises as on firework night he is terrible and thunder or any bangs he goes beserk, i know in time the puppy will adapt to my dad and brother coming in off of nights but at first he is going to think that we are up and are going to go into them.
This is why my mum thinks it is a good idea to sleep both boys in the conservatory so as they won't hear people entering the house in the early hours of the morning.
Since we moved from our old house where Hamish slept in the conservatory i have noticed that you here him overnight if there is a noise and i am concerned that he will panic the puppy if he too starts whining like i think he may if the puppy starts to cry.
Has anybody else found this when they have introduced another puppy that the older dog has reacted to the puppy crying, he may not but knowing what hamish is like i am sure he is going to.

Not being a moderator or admin person on this forum it's very presumptious of me to mention that it's a heck of a lot easier to read and respond to ONE currently active topic on the same subject rather than two! But I will! Please don't take offence though because it's not intended.
Sorry
Just wanted to check how other owners had got on introducing a puppy to an older dog and if they had any trouble with the older one playing up and frightening the puppy.
I didn't think about having 2 posts on the same board causing problems

It doesn't! But quite a lot of what you've said in topic post is repeated in your other topic and I'm losing the thread...:D
Is your conservatory a long way away from the front of the house? Only my dog would hear the noise of someone coming in if she was in front of the door, out in the conservatory or in fact 3 doors down! I have a Scottie and my sister has a Westie and both of them know when someone is approaching the house even if they are at the very furthest point away from it, especially at night. Therefore I'm wondering if whether they are going to hear the noise anyway, it might be better at the front where Hamish sleeps now, where the person coming in can quickly stick their head in to reassure the dogs of who it is. After a couple of times the pup will learn the routine and know who it is anyway, like Hamish does.
Did you manage to solve all your allergy problems in the end? I know you went through a terribly worrying time when Hamish was young and its good to see you were able to keep him, and get another, I'm dead jealous!

Hi
Yes my allergies were never found to be completely linked to Hamish and they said it could be anything that sets it off a lot were food allergies which i am avoiding and it has helped, it the hot weather i still suffer but i just couldn't give me little man up when there was no proper proof it was him. Hamish himself also went through a tough time allergy wise late last year and he had to have a lot of blood tests and skin scrapings his was linked to food and housedust mites and grass, pollen which we are now avoiding and he is a lot better, also he is on Atopica drug which is helping a lot. I went to see the pup today he is 7 weeks old and absolutely gorgeous i am calling him Robbie, the breeder said it will be fine for him to sleep in the conservatory as long as its not too hot or too cold, i explained that in the winter we had a radiator so she said he will be absolutely fine in there, i just need to decide now where to sleep them both?
Thanks again

As you've had problems with Hamish's skin, is the new puppy coming from a specialist breeder who shows their Westies and is aware of the importance of course coat/good skin? :)
Yes he is this breeder is a top shower in the south of england and i was recommended to her by somebody who posts on the board who lives in scotland, she has had some of her dogs this is why i have waited a little while for her to have a litter.
I didn't want to take the risk of having another westie with skin problems as it is unfair to the animal, Hamish is a brilliant dog and his temperment is great but the skin problem is a big fault.
Thanks
