I took my beloved three dogs out for their morning walk. We walked about 15 minutes then when into a ball park and they chased the ball for about 10-15 minutes...we then took a slow walk home.
Suddenly my boy pulled his back leg up as though he had trodden in somthing I checked his paw but there was nothing, I tried to see if he could walk it off but he couldnt walk at all and lay on the ground. I rested him for a few minutes checking his paws for debris but nothing. So I ended up having toi carry him home. Usually he would never let me pick him up but he just let me lift him and he rested his head on my shoulder looking very upset and I staggered all the way home with him.
I got him home and checked him over again but still couldnt find anything gave him a rub down but he still seems very im-mobile and sorry for himself.
I initially thought he might have cramp but shouldnt that wear off after a few minutes?

Have another very good look at his paw, in between all the toes as he may have a thorn in it.
If you can't find anything in it and he is still reluctant to walk on it get him to the vets to be checked out.
Let us know how you get on.

How old is he. Sounds like a stifle problem. Could be a slipping stifle or a torn or sprained ligament.

hello , he is a 2 year old SBT. Fit and full of health. It did seem to me that it was a muscular problem although he was licking his foot.
My poor boy :(
I now know why people advise not getting a dog that you couldnt carry as I had to carry him home half a mile with two other dogs on lead....not fun...
I know it sounds rude but he is walking as though he had a pole shoved up his bottom

That's why I always walk with my cell phone. At around 40Kg there is no way I could carry my dog large distances.
I hope he's better soon.

Hi,
Check there isn't a glass splinter in his paw, they can be very hard to see,
if you go over the paw very slow if it has, it will hurt and he will pull his paw away.

hello
I ahve checked over his pads, he is usually very weary off me touching his feet he does not like it AT ALL! but I cant see any tenderness...
Someone has recommended some childrens Ibrupofren so I might give this a go although if there is pain there I generally dont like to digcuise it as you can do more harm than good although it will help take away any swelling if there is any.

Blondi.
Please do not give your dog Ibuprofen - it can be poisonous to them. If your dog is suffering your port of call should be the vet who may diagnose a muscular or joint problem that requires medical attention.
Since there are no obvious (to yourself) signs of what his problem is, it is surely in his best interests to have him professionally examined and certainly NOT medicated without superision.

Yes definitley go to your vet asap and in the meantime he's probably best to rest as much as possible!

I'd be inclined to make an early appointment with the vet rather than dosing him with unprescribed medication. His injuries have come on so suddenly and inexplicably that I'd get him properly examined as soon as possible.
PS. Edited to say I was clearly typing the above at the same time as Teri but my advice remains the same - and I concur with hers!!
Could be a back problem or a cruciate ligament problem...
Both of which will need vet's attention..
Hope he's soon feeling better.

Hi....been looking at the forum for ages but haven't ever posted. Just thought I would after reading this. I have 5 dogs but one of them a 3 year old Staffie went for a run the other day, nothing seemed wrong until we got home and she couldn't put any weight on her leg, this didn't get better by the next day so popped her to the vets to find out she had dislocated her knee cap. So your boy may have done something like that, my Staffie is going in for an op as her knee cap won't stay in place for very long....just not looking forward to the vets bill!!

My boy was licking his foot after a long walk 10 days ago, although I had checked it for grass seeds etc. When I looked closer he had torn a bit of his pad off, presumably on glass or something. He's been to the vet, and although it's still a bit nasty, I think it's on the mend. Hope your boy is ok too. :-)
hello! My dog was running about in a field once and she suddenly starten limping and i thought it was something in her paw because she wouldnt put it down, and it was very very sudden she hadnt limped at all before, but we took her to the vet and she said it was Patellar Luxation. I wouldnt have any idea if this is whats wrong with your dog but i thought your story sounded similar! good luck at the vets! im sure he will be fine!

Hi Lucy
Just wanted to wish you luck with your staffie and her patella operation. These operations can be very successful but you will have to make sure your dog has complete rest afterwards (cage rest is preferred). Your vet will tell you all about it, but I can't stress enough how important it is!

Hello
Took my boy to the vets and he has scuffed both pads on his back legs!! ouch! I couldnt see this morning but the vet pointed it out. HE is still hobbling along so Im bathing then in salt water and just letting the air get to them. So no walkies for about a week until they heal.
Thank you everyone for your tips and advice.
Take care
Lida

Good news that it's nothing too serious! :) Now, of course, you need to work out
why he's scuffed his pads and what you'll need to do to avoid it happening again.

Don't beat yourself up ;) We all have done some things that we later regret :)
All that matters now is that he is on the mend :)

Look on the bright side - that's an easier thing to cure than poor construction or nerve damage causing poor movement. :)

Sorry but could I add a question to this thread - should you never ever play with a dog on concrete or just make sure it isnt for too long? Our garden is paved other than flower beds so we quite often play ball or throw toys for him to fetch - should I be eliminating this altogether or just limiting the time?
thanks
Maxine

dogs are not silly and do know the diffrence between the harder ground and the grass. i have a fully paved yard, and althougth my dogs have always played rougth out there have never scuffed or hurt there paws. the only time i have had a problem was when i was playing with a dog on the grass at the park and they skidded to a stop on the grass but slid onto the concreat.

Maria.....thanks for the good luck. My Staffie is booked in for her op in a couple weeks time as I can then be at home with her. Yep don't worry she'll have cage rest for a long time and i'll be especially careful as she is a typical mad Staff that likes her mad 5 minutes running round everywhere. I had a Rottie that snapped her cruciate and she had to be very careful for a long time after her op.
Glad Ron hasn't done anything more serious and hopefully his scuffed paws will heal very soon!

Thank everyone, ROns almost back to normal he is walking fine and Im taking him on short walks on GRASS! No more ball playing on the concrete.
Silly really I never thought of it, I know alot of people who exercise their dogs on concrete to keep the nails short but I guess its the rapid turns and skids that have done it!
