Hi All

Im just about to insure Sox for the 1st time. He is a 2 year old Staffie.

I have done a search on one of these price comparison sites and have found some competative quotes but as you all well know it doesnt just come down to money. I would like to ensure that I have decent coverage but dont really know what im looking for

Can anyone give me an idea what levels of cover I should be looking at in terms of theft, 3rd party liability, accidental damage and vets fees? Also, let me know if theres anything additional I should seek.

Many Thanks :)
Caroline

Our insurance policy gives cover for life for on-going conditions as long as we keep paying the premium - very useful if your dog is unfortunate enough to suffer from an illness /condition that can be with him for the rest of his life i.e. epilepsy, joint problems etc.

If you enter the word insurance into the search feature you will be able to read lots of previous discussions on insurance which should help answer your questions :)

I can endorse what Harley says, look for lifetime cover. Our pup has just been diagnosed with an eye problem requiring regular tests and eye drops.  First year treatment is likely to be over £1000, with a similar amount every year for life. A number of insurers would only pay for the first year of treatment but we have insurance which covers for life, thank goodness. As with most things in life you tend to get what you pay for, hence the wide variation in premiums.

Make sure the policy has a lifetime payout on conditions and not just for one year.  Also check that they're not slipping in this 15% excess nonsense which means if you're pet has an accident or serious illness that racks up a thousand pounds or so in vets bills, you still have to pay 15% of the total cost.  I'm just switching from Marks and Spencer as they have introduced this for dogs over a certain age (which mine now is).  Try Halifax, they were very helpful to me.  I pay about 14 pounds a month for a 7yr old Border Terrier and that's the top cover.  There's a 50 pounds excess on this for all treatments. Some insurances want you to pay excess of either 15% of the bill or 50 pounds, whichever is the most so check that too.

Insurance companies are very good at taking your money but they don't want to take any risks!
