Hi welshie

It's a food supplement in powdered form made from green leafy vegetables and is available from Dorwest Herbs :)

Easy Green is spinach, parsley and watercress, 40%, 40% and 20%

I give it to one of my dogs all year round and the other one during the summer, in the winter she has Keepers Mix.

I make my dogs vegetable and lentil soup. I make a huge pot on Monday and it lasts through the week, refrigerated of course. Use very good quality chicken stock cubes as a base, I get them from our local health food shop as they are salt free, add plenty of lentils and let it bubble away whilst you prepare the rest of the veg. I put in swede, carrots, potatoes, leeks, mushrooms, tomatoes, sweet potato, peas and mixed dried herbs. Let it bubble gently for about 30 minutes then liquidise half of it and return the liquidised portion to the pan. Take some out for your own lunch. The dogs absolutely love it. Don't add leafy green veg as there is a risk of it fermenting if you do. It is particularly good for in whelp bitches as most of the vitamins and minerals the embryos need are in the lentils and veg.To get the full benefit, you need to start giving it to the bitch as soon as she has been mated, whilst the embryos are forming.

Hi Saxon,

Just a note that leeks are alliums (ie, onions) and in sufficient quantity are toxic to dogs, so it might be a good idea to leave them out of the soup, especially if you are feeding it to pregnant bitches.

Thanks for the tip re salt-free stock cubes, I've been looking for them and never thought to check the health food store.  I make treats for my dogs and want to use them for added flavour.

I only put 1 leek in the whole pot. I always understood they were safe if well cooked, but I will check. Thanks.

Hi Saxon,Can i ask what the point of adding leek is,what nutrtional benefits does it provide that cant be found in other veggies? How come you use chicken stock cubes, and not real chicken? Sorry one more question :D Do you feed meat or a complete food to your dogs, this soup is only a treat or a add in,right? :)

The point of adding leek is that I also feed the soup to my husband and he likes it, but I suppose he could get used to it without. I don't use chicken carcasses as I don't have them available in large enough quantity. I do use a chicken carcass if my husband and I have had chicken, but as the soup is also for human consumption, I can't use the carcasses from my tripe supplier. Yes, it is an addition. In the winter, I warm it in the microwave and give them all a ladle full on their main feed. In the summer I feed it cold. I always use loads of veg so that it is a thick hearty soup and the dogs love it, (so does my husband). Actually, writing all this down has made me have a re-think. I think in future I'm going to make two separate pots, then I can leave the leeks out of the dogs pot and add pearl barley, which my husband loathes.
