Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / thinks she is a dobermen (locked)
- By shihtzumad [gb] Date 22.08.02 19:18 UTC
i have a tiny maltese x chiuahuah and is very agressive to other dogs so far she has taken on a boxer a staff and a few other big breeds any suggestions on how to get her out of this would be great.

what is this to do with a dobermann? (correct spelling).....I do not see the connection.
- By shihtzumad [gb] Date 22.08.02 19:27 UTC
i do not mean to imply that a doberman is an agressive dog just that she thinks she is a big dog and please excuse my spelling.

does this mean you are speechless Christine?????
- By Jackie H [gb] Date 23.08.02 08:06 UTC
The only difference between a Chihuahua & a Gt Dane is size, they are all dogs & if they behave in an unaceptable way they must be corrected. With a small dog this should be easy as you can say no and walk in the other direction, the dog will have to follow not being large enough to resist. Ja:)kie
- By shihtzumad [gb] Date 23.08.02 09:11 UTC
i have taken her to exemption shows and have tried every thing you have said but she still wont back off so i think i will take her to a dog behavourist probably spelt wrong but i know what i mean.
im most likely doing something wrong my self anyway although i dont have any problems with my shihtzus, thanks for the help.
- By Jackie H [gb] Date 23.08.02 12:47 UTC
Exemption shows are not a place to train a dog, your dog should be taken to a dog club class where you will learn how to teach your dog manners. Jackie

It means as I cannot draft a polite response I am keeping my mouth shut!

Livid at this person's unwarranted denigration of my breed

Well said Christine :) I am glad I wasn't the only one to jump on this one - but you said it much better than I could have done!
Sharon, Salem & Dizzy (Dobermanns who are both VERY nice and not at all aggressive!!!)

Oh Pleeze! Put the damn hackles down ladies!!
Shihtzumad has already explained that she never meant anything offensive by her post but simply tried to imply that her little dog thinks it's larger than it actually is - and used a larger breed of dog as an example!! It just happened to be a Dobe that she chose - so what???!!!
Give her a break!
- By Melodysk [gb] Date 23.08.02 13:42 UTC
Have to agree with Lara here Ladies ...you do seem to have jumped on the poor person without giving her a chance :) She wasn't putting ALL dobermans down , just using that breed as an example .

Melody :)

i have appolagised for my indiscretion as regards the dobermann but i put my post on for advice, i gave my explanation i wont do it a gain you are right dobermanns are not aggresive in fact i would say most breeds are mere pussy cats compared to you lot apart from a few of you i have found you to be rude and snobby rest assured i will not be posting on here
- By steve [gb] Date 23.08.02 17:15 UTC
don't let it put you off ,I have only just started with this site and I'm sure I can offend more people than you !!! I do it on a daily basis .I have a dobe and I wasn't offended .I have had some good advice here so give it another go.(we are all protective of things we love)

the last thing i wanted was to affend any one iknow a few dobies my self and they are sweethearts i admit i dont know much about these dogs , a lot of people give these dogs and others a bad name this is why i appologised in the first place i would not intentianly try to affend someone about their dog.
i found out about my little dogs aggresion at the exemp show this is why i dont take her any more
- By satincollie (Moderator) Date 23.08.02 16:52 UTC
Obviously she doesn't know Dobes as well as you and just thought of the first larger dog that came to mind a mistake and not meant as a slur I am sure.:) Gillian
- By Kerioak Date 23.08.02 18:18 UTC
Seeing as some of you think I made a mistake in being insulted on behalf of my breed I wonder you haven't given any advice? It is this type of so called innocent and misleading comment that gives both Dobes and other large breeds a bad name.

However, suggest you keep your dog on a loose lead around others until you have the problem under control. (Tight lead might hype it up) If it has attacked all these other breeds then is is probably lucky to still be in one piece, next time the dog on the receiving end might not be so tolerant.

Find a good training class or teacher who can teach you "watch" (to distract your dog when others it might wish to visit are around) and also to teach you a reliable sit stay and distant down. Just because you have a small dog does not mean it needs to be any less well trained than the larger breeds. These take time and effort to teach throughly.

More or less what I said only to be told I was rude and aggressive. Perhaps this is a case of the written word being missunderstood. Shall we all start again. The second time I have said this today the other was to Mick, must be good for me, humble pie that is. Ja:)kie

My comments Jackie - did not include you :)

I had a feeling you'd come around ,big dogs do get bad press and we do get fed up defending them ,I've only had my dog for 8 mths and already I've had one offer to shoot him ! (funnily enough I declined ). asking for help is not easy .I know a few people who are waiting for us to fall on our faces.you have a lot of experience and you gave me good advice .we were all too busy waiting for the boxing gloves to come out before we dare offer any words of wisdom ( I hav'nt got any)

hi,
this is the first time I have posted on this board and I find some of your answers to shihzumad very rude I know this lady and she is one of the nicest and least inoffensive people I have ever met,I have the sister to her maltese x chi and she is just the same she goes for other dogs to and yes she has been to dog training ,could it be that you are so defendsive of dobermann's because you know that some have got a nasty streak after all they don't use them for guard dogs for nothing .
- By Lara Date 23.08.02 20:46 UTC
Foodog - your post has elements as rude and unnecessary as theirs! :(
- By foodog [gb] Date 23.08.02 20:53 UTC
not rude just the truth.

i think this is going to far people can say things and this can be picked up the wrong way which i think it was in this case. and i think that this has been address. there is no need for this foodog i think that the people on here have already said that they jumped to fast and have said so. most people are on this forum to help people. i do not know why you was so rude there was no need for it. i think that this should be stopped now before it goes to far. we all need help somtimes that is what this forum is for.

Is this not the purpose of this site? to give help and advice???????????? I think you all need to get out more.

its no good getting "naffed off" with people because they don't like your chosen "breed" ! I have a rottie and an old english sheepdog. oes comes across as a "cuddly bear" which is what he is, lovely, cuddly, handsome and very intelligent! if he thought either me, my daughter or anyone i was speaking to at the time, was being threatend he would "protect"( grumbling -you can hear the growl _ no teeth just not happy) its just his way ( he is wrong and is corrected) the rottie lovely( i think she is wonderful) as she is, is totally ignored.Rottie is a lovely girl happy waggy stump, bottom going all " look at me" " stroke me, make a fuss of me" all i hear is oooooooooo its a rottie. They love to cuddle old grumpy chops caus he looks cuddly (oes) but totaly ignore rottie, i explain shes totaly friendly and most people are won over because basically she won't give up till someone strokes her. I've heard at least 4 couples go away and say "you wouldn't think it was a rottie"
so my point is education works most of the time, not grumbling you have to except a dog for what it is a "dog"
it ts the owners who get it wrong. by making a lout and letting them get away with it all dogs can be educated. most dog owners want a happy, healthy "rounded" dog but depending on the breed get lumbered with a sterotypical ( other peoples view) dog as in my case
- By carolyn Date 24.08.02 08:04 UTC
Hi Teters

May I ask where you got such a wonderful well adjusted rotty from ;) :D,she sounds ideal :-)
I do tend to agree though with most of the bigger breeds people are weary and I respect that some things arent my cup of tea.
My rotties think they are yorkshire terriers..little things that should sit on your lap and be spoilt (in no way meant to be nasty to yorkies)
Some dogs will just be dogs and thats why we are all here defending and loving our respective breeds, same as we would our children and families..........because we care :-)

Can't see what you are so miffed about - there are only two people who have given ANY type of answer to the original question and that was Jackie and myself.

Christine

Hi

Im not miffed at all :-)
my new thing for the rest of the year is to live and let live
im not going to argue,im going to look for good in all dogs and people Im sitting by the ring side and looking at the dogs positively and generally relax about life.
I have no axe to grind with anyone.
Maybe its better i dont post anymore,Im not the most interlectual (see cant spell either) person in the world but maybe its a case of least said soonest mended..
Ok I go on silent mode now and sit back and read.
- By shihtzumad [gb] Date 24.08.02 09:30 UTC
enough is eough life is too short to carry on like this,we all have our own appinions on the subject so lets respect this.
thanks foodog and others for your support, let me refraise my original question my little dog is as brave as a lion but dosent realise that a bigger dog could realy hurt her, hope that sounds better.
