Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / micro chip tracing

My brother in law bought a purebred Chihuahua (named Tito) from a pet store with the option to have the dog come with registration papers(for an additional price). He did not want them so he did not buy the papers. After buying the dog he decided he did not have time for Tito and gave him to my wife and I. Tito had been micro chipped before he was bought. I was wondering if anyone knew if you can use the micro chip to trace the bloodlines and be able to get registration papers for the dog. Thank you for the help.

In my understanding the chips carry only an ID number. If it was issued by a registry then it may be possible to get information on the dogs pedigree. If not, I think it would be tough. However, I would contact the pet store that he got the dog from and they should have a record of the puppy and paperwork for it... since papers were offered. Hopefully it hasnt been too long and they keep the paperwork for a period of time. Also some registries allow registration by DNA testing. This can get pretty expensive but if you are set on getting papers its worth looking into. I am sure someone else on here will have more knowledge and better advice for you. Just trying to help the little I can.
GOOD LUCK

Hi Stuart

My knowledge of microchipping tracing (and I might be wrong !!) is that there is a company in the Uk that has all the details on their system for each particular dog. These details would have been entered at the time of microchipping by the then, original owners. If you loose you dog, they can be scanned, which will provide all the details to return it to its home. Thus giving you the address of the person who originally had your dog, to contact for breed lines etc. But I think with the current Data Protection Act, they would not give you that informtation. If you know who bred your dog, and what its registered name is, then you could try calling the kennel club, and they might be able to provide you with a 5 generation pedigree certificate.

Sorry just re read your post and saw that he was bought from a pet store., so not sure if any of the advice would be any use !! :( :D

I'm sure someone would be able to give you a starting point...

I checked the PetLog page on the KC site and they say to contact dog warden, vet etc or someone who has a scanner and is a registered user who can then contact PetLog and ask questions

Not a lot of help but may be a starting point

When I got Toby microchipped the vet passed his details on to the microchip company and I then got a copy of them for checking. It just has details of the vet doing the chip and my contact details but when a dog changes owners the microchip details should have been changed. (otherwise it sort of defeats the point of chipping) but if this wasn't done the company may have owners details at time of chipping but, as already said, they shouldn't divulge them under the Data Protection Act.

hi stu,
i am atrained microchipper, and only the animals pet name is registered, no k.c details, breeders can have there details included on the forms if they wish to be contacted if the animal is resold, taken in to rescue. the previous owner would have the documents and should pass them on to you so you can register the dog in your name, microchips are only for identification and do not carry anthing regarding it,s breeding. regards tina

The microchips that we use include a space for the KC number to be included on the database. If the KC number is on Tito's details then it may be possible to gain the information you want from the KC.
