I would like some advice about my Cavalier King Charles,Rosie. She's 11 weeks old and my son was looking after her when I went to the shops. He was very upset when I got home and said he thought she'd swallowed the inside bit of a biro as she was chewing something and it was the end gold writing bit which he managed to take off her. However there was no sign of the tube it was attached to. This was on Saturday morning and it's now Monday and she's fine.I've kept an eye on her motions and they're normal, she hasn't been sick, she's eating well,as lively as ever and her tummy is quite soft and doesn't hurt her when I press it.Do you think he's made a mistake or do symptons take longer than 2 days to show up? I'm not sure she could actually physically swallow a pen because the distance between her mouth and the back of her throat is only a few inches. With it being the Bank Holiday weekend it seemed silly to call out an emergency vet when she's fine but I'll take her tomorrow if there's any need.

Never say never, it can take a long time for objects to pass through a dog, with the risk of leaking ink too, I would proberbly say not to take any chances.

Generally when a dog eats something that the body can not break down it will sit in the stomach or bowel and either cause constipation, and eventually pass through the motions or a dog will continually vomit bile until the object is brought back up it can take days until the body is forced to eject it, so she may not show any signs yet.

I'm just a little worried about the ink inside the pen bit, (am I understanding that right, it is the inside of the pen that is missing) could you call your vet to ask whether this would be dangerous to your dog if it leaks into her body?

Have a check under the sofa, chairs etc, to see if it has rolled anywhere first though.

P.S. you would be surprised at what dogs can eat:eek:

Hopefully she will be ok, but please just check that fact first.

yes don't be fooled by her being a puppy and quite small!  My dog at one of my husbands thick long wool socks, that was probably the length of him at the time! and he managed to pass that through. He then swallowed my daughters trainer sock 1/4 the size and this actually blocked and had to operate to remove it !!  so just keep watching her, i would call the vets for advice about ink and any damage this may cause. If they aren't too worried then be very vigilant with her, at the first sign of any change in anything go straight to the vets.
Hope everything turns out ok!

Thanks for that.I'm not sure how much ink was in the pen. We've looked all around for it but haven't found it. The encouraging thing is we haven't found the hard plastic outside bit either and I'm sure she couldn't have swallowed that so hopefully it's a false alarm! Rosie's still fine with no constipation, sickness or diarrhoea but she's going to the vet's for her 2nd vacination tomorrow so I'll have a word about it with the vet.
