i've had this problem with my ckc since i've had her if i leave her run lose in the porch at night or if we got out etc then she goes to the toilet, and chews the door, which is to be expected at her age hence why i put her in a cage, but if i put her in a cage, she still goes to the toilet which is really unusual as dogs are clean , last night she was taken out at 12.15, and i got up just after 8.00 to let her out and she had pooed in her cage, and seemed quite happy to stand, sit in it just wagged her tail as when she saw me, she doesn't even seem bothered, just now i took her out, brought her back in, put her in her cage whilst we eat and she peed in there :rolleyes: shes now just over 7 months surly she should have better control then this i never had a problem with my other dog, its almost like she does it on purpose because she doesn't want to be in there, but at the same time if shes loose then she chews and she still wees? shes not locked up all day just when i can't supervise her and its for her own saftey, i don't use the cage as punishment, and shes got nice warm bedding, toys etc. she does go outside and I praise her for that, and shes taken out regular and very last thing at night, i just don't know what to do i'm washing her and dog beds nearly every day and its starting to get upsetting as she such a lovely little girl, I just worry that shes never going to grow out of this any ideas?

She doesn't know that she isn't meant to go inside, she's not doing the wrong thing on purpose.  You need to go right back to basics, take her out every half hour or hour and praise lots when she goes, introduce a word when she wees so that you can get her to associate that word with going for a wee and then you will be able to get her to go when you say the word.  Make sure you go out with her every single time so that you can praise her when she does go in the right place, you need to set her up to wee in the right place and not give her the chance to get it wrong.  If you catch her weeing inside, then say ahh ahh, or no what ever you choose and calmy take her outside and l;et her finish out there and praise.  It's quite possible that she hasn't got full bowel control yet and that eight hours at night is too long for her, you might need to get up earlier and let her out!  You could also try moving her feeding times, maybe feed a bit earlier at night so that she can go just before bed time.  This isn't something she will just grow out of I'm afraid, you need to teach her, just be patient and consistent you will be able to do it.

In addition to the advice given about going back to basics, make sure that you have thoroughly cleaned the area that she has messed to help break the habit. Do this by using biological soap powder dissolved in warm water and wipe over with white vinegar / spirit to break down any remaining fatty deposits.

Personally, I wouldnt even acknowledge the messing and I would continue to praise her when she goes outside.

Hi my Cavaliers sleep in my room when they get out they mess but never in my room but if they can't make it all the way through the night they get restless and start pacing which usually wakes me up and i take them down and put them out at first i had a lot of early mornings with my male but he sleeps through unless he is ill or thirsty he wakes me up to get a drink.
