I have a 12 month old staffie who has been having 3 meals per day - bfast weetabix with milk, lunch - 3/4 pupy pouch +  biscuits, tea 3/4 puppy pouch + biscuits. Recently he seems to have goe off the weetabix so i decided to reduce meals to 2 per day, am - full puppy puch with biscuits, pm - full puppy pouch with biscuits. He seeeems hungry, but then again he always is. Do you think this is right or can anyone advise on regime.

I am against feeding weetabix to puppies, lettalone adult dogs.It is nothing more than wheat and sugar and provides no health benefits what so ever

There's nothing wrong with splitting up your dogs daily allowance into 2-3 meals, this is a much healthier and fullfilling way to feed than one large meal.

What do you think the amounts should be for his age i  am getting conflicting advice from people

Can I ask why you are still feeding puppy food when he's 12 months? Maybe he should move onto junior or adult?

That is such a hard question to answer, there are so many variables like weight, how much exercise he gets on a daily basis,metabolism,slow/fast? One dog  may need double to the next of the same breed.Lifestyle has a lot to do with it.Are you feeding according the bag directions?

Re: the amounts, that does not sound enough to me for a full grown dog.

I feed dry complete and also fresh meats, so am not used to pouches and tinned meats, but it just does not sound enough.

I agree your dog needs to be on adult foods now, check his weight and see what the pouch advises, remember it is only a guide some dogs will eat more, some less, if your dog is really hungry, then feed him some more.

As long as he is fit and not overweight let him eat extra.

I would think that he would need more than that in a day, but then depends on the dog!! Adult foods would be the way to go now... I usually feed my dogs to how there poos are, if they are firm and the dog is still hungry, I fed them more at the next meals, if they then start to turn too soft, I then reduce it and know i am at the right amount!. Don't know if anyone else would agree, but this is how I have done it for a long time and seems to work for us! having 2 very hungry dogs who would happily eat double what a packet or box says, this does seem to work out ok.

> with biscuits,>

It also depends how much biscuits you're giving..1 cup,2 cups?

Certainly I'd ditch the weetabix - a 12 month old dog doesn't need it and won't be getting any great nutritional benefit from it - so I'd suggest you replace it by cutting lunch out and feeding your dog proper dog food in the morning and evening. Also there's no need to be feeding puppy food at this age either so I'd change to a decent adult food. Recommended quantities tend to be larger than necessary and I've always tended to go by appetite rather than anything written on the pack. However, I'm yet to meet a dog that follows any single "correct" amount of food and you have to judge this yourself based on how much exercise the dog takes, whether or not it is overweight and, as a good starter, how hungry (or not) are they with the amounts you are serving them.
