HAs anyone else had experience of their dog having a reaction to the kennel cough ?
My 6 mth old golden retriever had the vaccine 10 days ago & has developed a gruff cough, with occasional retching, noisy breathing when excerting himself. He's a little off his food, but otherwise fine.  I've had him checked over by the vet today, who says there is nothing serious going on, but I wondered if he could have a small dose of kennel cough as a consequence of the vacine (following the theory that when humans are given the flu vaccine they can occasional develop a mild case of flu). Any advice very welcome. Thanks.

Twice in the past I've had my dogs vacinaated and they have come down with a mild case of kennel cough afterwards.

Yes it is quite normal for there to be a reaction to the kennel cough vaccine that appears to be a milder form of kc. This is more common with the yearly nobivac vaccinations than the 6 monthly intrac type. Our vets often warn people of this side effect, so it is fairly common.

Thanks for this.  He did have the yearly vaccine & the vet didn't warn me! He's already picking up with the antibiotics, but this morning he's refused his food - poss because I gave his antibiotics first in some cheese, so either he's feeling a bit nauseaous or has turned his nose up at the dried food after the cheese!!

I'm really sorry that your golden retriever has had an adverse reaction to the kennel cough vaccine.

I've been advised that the kennel cough vaccine is not necessary, the illness itself is not usually as serious as some of the side effects of the vaccine!

Keep a close eye on your dog and if you are concerned for any reason then do contact your vet again.  Sometimes vets appear oblivious to  adverse reactions to vaccines.   If you feel that your vet is not as concerned as you, then do get a second opinion.

I'm not sure that mild KC symptoms would be viewed as an adverse reaction but rather a normal one.

Thanks Maria.  This is my 4th golden retriever & with the 2nd one I didn't give the vaccine & he had such a horrible case of k cough it was awful. With my 3rd golden he had to be sedated when the vet tried to give the nasal vaccine, so we didn't try that again, poor thing. I'm planning to show this boy tho' which is why I've had him vaccinated as it's recommended. As with all vaccines tho' it's a difficult choice & I hate to see my lovely dog suffering, but he's a lot better today, so I'm hoping I made the right decision.

Im with Isabel on this one,Some animals show mild clinical signs after they have been given a live vaccine.
   Monitor it but not nesc. a cause for concern Helen :) <- reassuring smile!
For future ref tho' maybe use the Vaccine on a risk assement basis and not a consitent 6 month top up (Morten and Wright vaccine manufacturers recommed this)
  Alternately you could look into using 'Nosodes' as an alternative if thats your 'bag'.. (when Im not clutching my Mulberry Emmy, Homeopathy is sometimes my bag ;) google search Nosodes its all interesting stuff and may give you some ideas for the future and different avenues to explore.
