Can I suggest any one who is about to embark on showing be aware of picking up the likes of kennel cough. I am sure there are many other things to think about too, but having been stricken (well Jack really then), I am sorry nobody suggested the vaccine to me. Or that I didn't consider things like that. :-(

In over 20 years I've had no problem, including having dogs with kennel cough in the grooming parlour.  I do spray both me and the dogs with parvocide when I come home from shows and regularly in the parlour between dogs.  Don't know whether that does any good or not?
Sorry that you've had problems.

Karen,

I think you have just been unlucky - we too picked it up last year but the dog that picked it up doesn't get shown so hadn't been to a show - I don't think I will vaccinate against it this year though.

Hope Jack is back to his perky self soon.

I vacinate my dogs against kennel cough, my vet tells me that the vacination only lasts around 3-4 months, is there a vacine that would last 12 months?

Sorry I don't know - I just meant wouldn't bother in the winter months - mind you if I had a fragile/very elderly dog I might as I wouldn't want to risk it.  Having said that last year - it was the youngsters that caught it and my 10yr old Irish lady (she is very fit and sturdy) didn't so much as get a sniff of it!

ah but there was an outbreak after the LKA last year (or year before) so I always get mine done in november ;) and I'm sure the vet said it lasts 12 months?

I had to give mine the vaccine a few weeks ago as they were going in to kennels and it was a required by them. The vet told me that it lasted for 12 months.

did hear that once they have had it they do tend to have an immunity to it?  What do you think?  Is that just a myth?

Mind you we don't do too many of the winter shows although planning on doing Setter and Pointer which is known for it - so maybe I will now - oh I don't know!!!  Bit decisive me!

Just like the flu jab, the dogs are only vaccinated against a couple of strains anyway and the chances of the vaccine protecting against the current bugs doing the rounds are .........?  I don't see the point and prefer to keep their immune systems good , allow them to develop their own immunity to whatever they may come up against and use a virucide that kills everything. :)

Thanks for that information Val!

Yes I had a friend who gave her dog the vaccine for going into kennels and a a few days after coming out she developed kennel cough!

This is the first time that I have given it to them and won't be bothering unless they have to board again and it is required by the kennels.

In the forty years my mum has been involved with dogs she has only had 1 dog with kennel cough and has never vaccinated in all those years.

My vet told me there are three different types of kennel cough and the jab only covers two of them:confused:
I don't normally give my dogs this jab, but I'm boarding them in a kennel and again they have asked me to get this jab done.  This will be the first time I've ever boarded any of my dogs, I hope they'll be ok.

We are such softees aren't we - I'm sure we miss them more than they miss us!  They'll be fine I'm sure!
Says the girl who hasn't had a holiday in two years cos won't leave the dogs!!!

I'll see how it goes re the vaccine and at the moment think I won't vaccinate (but in the case of kennels requesting it then you have little choice!)

We normally wouldn't leave the dogs either.  But it's our honeymoon
- By rachelsetters Date 25.08.06 09:45 UTC
A must then - mind you have promised OH we will go next year - we do need a break - so going to look for a good pet sitter - my new dog walker does offer this service so we will see how it goes with her!

HAVE A WONDERFUL HONEYMOON - HOPE IT'S SOMEWHERE NICE!

Found this on a greyhound site.  Look at the very last line.  As their dogs are money to them, you'd expect them to vaccinate if it would do any good??
