Hello
My bitch is due to have her litter the first week in Sept, she is also due her booster on the 1st Sept. How long should I wait to have the booster done. Would it be okay to have the booster done when all the puppies have gone to their new homes.

why dont you get her bloods checked at the vets to see if she requires her booster
Hi Woollysp,
Your vet is the 1st person to ask. It is my understanding that some immunuty is carried on 3 months from the due date.
I am in a situation a little worse than yours in that I missed my bitches booster by accident then suddenly realised that she would whelp her pups after the 3 month leeway time. After a long discussion with my vet, who had actually spoke to the vaccine manufacturing company he had decided she must be vaccinated at the 5 full week mark (actually tomorrow). I can say I am not happy but I put the question to the vet and he has assured me it it better to do this rather than no vaccine. He did tell me the reason to vaccinate at this stage rather than earlier in her pregnancy but it was very complicated - something to do with the placentas. The second bootser is to be done 2 weeks after whelping.
Sorry I can't be of more help. You should really speak to your vet.

If you have always vaccinated your bitch then I would wait until after her puppies are weaned & away to their new homes. What is the 3 month rule? As I understand it you can go at least 6 months over ~ my Vet says this plus I read it recently on one of the vaccine manufacturers websites.
For me, as long as the bitch had her puppy jabs & a booster at around 15 months & she's in full health (which she should be if having a litter) then any un-necessary jabs can wait. If you were expecting would you be wanting un-necessary chemicals & live vaccines injecting into you?

Yes this would certainly be ok & is what I would do.

As you won't be taking the bitch out into public areas whilst she is nursing her puppies anyway,I think it would be safe to leave her until the puppies are fully weaned.

In another thread you state that you discussed vaccinating puppies with your Vet. Surely you discussed this matter at the same time?

If it was me I wouldn't do anything, if she's due in September and so is the booster, more than likely she'll still be covered especially as these days people are saying to leave it 3 years inbetween.

A few years ago, I expected that my bitch would be due to be either mated or in whelp when her booster was due. I had a talk to my Vet and he said under no circumstances boost her at that time. He said once the pups were born and away from the Mother then it would be okay to have her vaccinations done and that the bitch would come to no harm waiting for this period of time. Hope this info helps.
No I didn't discuss this with my vet as I was so occupied with the puppies that the booster injection for my other bitch never entered my head. I never realised it was due the same time as she was to whelp. It was only that I got a reminder from the vets that I realised

Crikey you're keen on hard work, two litters in three months,

Dawn R.
Yes I agree very hard work however to see such adorable puppies healthy and contented makes it all worthwhile. The hardest bit is when they go their new homes. I hate those day a few tears are shed.

You'll certainly have a choice of pups to keep! :) How many are staying?
One from each litter we are keeping the puppies we have now are all staying within the family so we will see them a lot but it's still not the same as them being yours
