Topic Dog Boards / Health / Hairloss in Bitch after weaning pups

I wonder if anyone has had this before.
My  bitch has suffered with alot of hairloss since her pups were weaned. It started on the legs before patches either side of her body started to go. Now her hair from her body has thinned right out (it has strarted growing back). The hair on her head, 'ruff' around her neck and her tail are all unaffected. Also her post-partum bleeding hasnt stopped. It is only occasional and the blood looks fresh with no odour or discharge coming from the vulva. Her pups were born 8 weeks ago, the hairloss started when they were 6 weeks old. She seems healthy and is as lively as usual.
My vet examined her and said that she could'nt find any 'nasties', and and due to the hair falling out in a 'bi-lateral' pattern it was hormone related. The bleeding I was told was nothing to worry about if she seems fine in herself and she isn't anaemic.
I've heard of women losing there hair after having babies, but I couldnt find anything about it in any dog books. I've been giving her Efavet 330 (two capsules once a day) and bathing her once a week in neem oil shampoo.
Obviously this is just a case of 'sit-and-wait' but I just wanted to see if anyone else has had this problem. The poor thing looks terrible, even if shes still acting like her old self!

My bitch always got this and I finally worked out what it was -it was the pups scratching the fur off her when they start to stand up to feed! (They scratch with their front paws when they are trying to hold on.) The fur started to grow back after each litter as soon as the pups were not feeding from her.

It is very common for bitches to have hair loss when their puppies are 5 to six weeks.  It is usually worst at the sides of the neck and on the backs of the rear legs.  They tend to look at their worst when the pups are being collected at about 8 weeks!

:D my pups are now 7 weeks and poor Tia is looking more like a 2ft tall  hairless chinese crested. All very normal ;)

 Leos go bald as coots after the weaning stage, tails like whips, they look pathetic :D :D But it does grow back - sometimes even better than before :P

Samoyeds lose all their coats too a few weeks after whelping, so much so that you can often see their skin but by the time the pups come out at their first show mum is usually in full bloom.

Pomeranian's are awful at this too, especially around their necks, they can go bald!  It does soon come back again though, thankfully.
