Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Breeding from such a young bitch

Hi,
While on our search for a bitch pup,we encounterd a litter that had been bred by somebody trying to learn about the breed, all the necessary health tests had been done with good results but the bitch that had the pups was only 14 months old.The bitch had been mated apparently under advice of there vet as she had,had a womb infection previously after her first season and by mating her it would apparently break the cycle of infection.I wouldn't have thought that a vet would give advice like that and was quite surprized.
Thoughts please.

I suppose the problem is that vets are really only there to give medical advice - not necessarily ethical advice. Also they can only offer it and hope the client hears what is being said, and not what they *want* to hear.

I was told years back that my dog could be bred from beyond her first season. Yes, she *could* but that doesn't mean she *should*. She was fit and well enough but way way way too young. I took my breeding advice from my breeder and my Breed Club and just got the vet to stick to the medical stuff.

the vet advice me to seven year go to mate my bitch whos was two years old at the time she to had all her test done eyes and hips, but she was coming into season every 4 to 5 months, and worryed that she may end up having pyo.she had 10 pups she was the best mum to the the puppys then she went to have another litter three later.and it did change her cycle of her season to 6 to 8 months apart.

Can I be cheeky and ask what breed?

I have heard that advice before, to mate on the next season after an episode of Pyometra. So it's not unusual, but it's possible that it could be old fashioned outdated advice, because it's something I have known for many years. Of course it maybe isn't cut and dried when the bitch is so young though. I'd have thought a course of prophylactic anti-biotic therapy might have been an option here, to allow her to wait longer.
