I'd start with a vet check, a medical reason for any change of behaviour is always recommended.

I agree a vet check is the first thing to do. Most vets however tend to give a fairly simple check over. Sometimes dogs may need more indepth tests (eg blood tests, neural tests etc) so if nothing comes up, don't dismiss health, go back to the vet and discuss the situation with him or her :)

Good luck

Panting for no obvious reason can be a sign of stress.Perhaps something upset the dog while he was crated 'at night' and now he associates the two?

I agree with that too, I did write words to this effect in my post but deleted them as I was too tired to make any sense :P

I had a dog who hated going in one particular room at night only; this was (we eventually found out) because of upstairs tenants who had taken up their carpet and mydog was upset by the extra noise and banging at night...other cases are of dogs being scared by mice in the home (yes really!) and of household noises such as fridges, central heating etc....
