Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Intolerance of Any Dry Complete Food?
- By Cairnmania [gb] Date 16.08.06 09:08 UTC
Abby has always had a problem with soft poo - until I switched to Naturediet.  She also had minor anal gland "issues" which almost completely disappeared after I started adding a bit of bran to her Naturediet.

Now I too am searching for an alternative to Naturediet, given all their problems.  I decided to go back to my old regime of a dry complete mixed with some fresh meat.  So yesterday I fed both my dogs JWB Duck with a bit of fresh chicken - in the evening Abby had liquid poo.  She likes the JWB and I've fed it to her before in small amounts as a treat, which was fine.   It's not as if I gave her a large quantity of the JWB either, it was about 1/3 of the recommended daily amount.   My dogs' evening meal is people food (meat, veg) so I never have fed them anywhere near a full day's worth of dog food.

I am so frustrated!  I checked my Pets at Home this morning and they were out of stock of Naturediet.  So now I am waiting until this afternoon to see if the delivery they expect arrives or it's a no-show, given it's already two hours late. The clerk at the till said, "what's happening is they are having real problems at the factory getting the packages sealed and they're exploding."  Maybe I am being overcautious, but it seems to me like I am putting my dogs at risk feeding them Naturediet if their quality control is so poor that they are releasing poorly sealed packets for sale.

In the meantime, Abby is on homemade chicken and rice.   I am unsure whether to stick with the JWB, but this time introduce it even more gradually or try another dry complete.   She is not a fussy eater, but does not like Burns.  I've fed her on Purina Puppy whatever (from breeder) and then on Science Diet, neither suited her in the poo department.  They do not suit me either, in terms of the quality of food I want to give her. The only readily available equivalent to Naturediet is NaturesMenu .. and I may well end up trying that to see if she tolerates it well.

The must puzzling part of this to me is that Abby can switch between any kind of people food with no problems whatsover.  Her evening meal is always something different.  It's only dry complete foods that she seems sensitive to - to the point where I'm actually wondering if she is intolerant of any dry complete.  Is that possible?

I don't know about the intolerance to dry food, but I think in your circumstances I'd be trying the good old tinned Chappie - readily available, even at your corner shop, fairly cheap and has been recommended by vets for years for dogs with sensitive stomachs.

My Papillon can't eat any kind of dry food, and rich canned foods didn't work either -Pedigree Chum for instance. However with Winalot cans he is in sparkling condition with wonderful soft, long, shiny coat and body just right, no problems at all. :)

We found quite early on that ours always had loose poos if fed anything with poultry in it - we never tried the duck though.
With the JWB lamb or fish, she's fine.

I've fed JWB for years, but always the Turkey, with Crackjacks to match.  The other flavours go straight through my oldest boy.

By the way - for those looking for NatureDiet in quantity, I just saw K9 Capers site saying they had bulk quantities of it again :)

Well, I want back to PAH and bought tablets that are supposed to help clear up diarhhea (?)  and some Naturesmenu.  They never did get the Naturediet shipment they were expecting today.  She's never had the Naturesmenu before, so I am just going to keep it on hand and give it a go when I am brave enough!

Besides the problems I am having with my own dog, I am really saddened that Naturediet has had what seems to be a series of really tragic events which were not their fault. I am very disappointed though in their complete lack of communication to their customers.  They now have every clerk in Pets at Home informing customers about the problems at their factory and "exploding packages." I am nervous now about buying it even if I can get it.  I just want to get Abby back to normal and then gradually see if something else suits her.  The way things are going, I'd be surprised if Naturediet were still in business by year end.

I may give another JWB variety a try once Abby's poo is back to normal.  I am just astounded at the reaction, given I'd fed her smaller amounts of the Duck Crackerjack and even the Duck meal before with no noticeable results.  I guess having it for a full meal just tipped her over the tolerance limit.

Of course, my other dog has poos like rocks no matter what he eats - looks like he'll be finishing off the JWB Duck!

My bitch can eat anything, still look great and do excellent poos.
Canikur is great for clearing funny tums.  I always keep some in the house.  They are a non prescription treat type tablet.  My vet introduced me to them a couple of years ago, they tend to be cheaper off the net.

Dose as instructed on the leaflet.

Thanks Hope, I will definitely order some to have on hand.

If Abby's problem does not get better tomorrow it's off to the vet with her.  I just read messages on the Naturediet site forum and it sure looks like a lot of dogs are getting sick from it.  Most with bloody mucuus and diarhhea.  I just hope Abby's problem is "only" from the JWB and she has not come down with something toxic that was festering from her last meal of Naturediet on Monday.

I know you probably would like to feed dry food, but why not give her an extra portion of your dinner each day ?
This is what dogs lived on before the days of complete foods, my family in the war time would give bones, and just scraps off the table for their working labradors.  They never seemed to do any harm.
Have you thought it may not be a food intollerance ?  Could it be a bacteria in the gut that needs a different type of antibiotic?  Or is it giardia?
Their are many different reasons why food can upset a dog.  Is it best to try and find out what exactly is it that she is allergic too.  It could be maize, wheat, gluten, beef, soya, food preservatives, or colourings. The list is long.
Good luck in trying to find out what it is.  I would always say liquid poo means something is not right with the diet.
Does she have collitus ? Or gut problems ?

If one food does not suit dont give her any more.
Have you tried Arden Grange, I know many people that use this one get good results.

Hi Silverdog,

With regard to sharing my dinner, I always make enough for people + two dogs!  Only about half their food per day is actually dog food.

I took Abby to the vet yesterday.  She's now on Hills Canine I/D for a couple of days, a nutritional supplement with probiotics, and had a shot of anti-inflammatory and antibiotics.  The latter because she started passing a bit of bloody mucuus.    The worrying thing is last week she managed to get hold of a cooked chicken bone and swallow it.  So if her diarhhea does not clear up in a few days she will also have an X-ray to see if it's still in her and causing problems.  She is very bright and lively, so I'm hoping that's not the cause of her problems.   She may well have eaten something outside that her system cannot cope with - fox scat past its sell-by date or something equally revolting   She is a terrible scavenger.

I don't believe she has an allergy to any foods. She never has anything to eat with artificial anything in it. The only food she has been intolerant to in the past is lamb, which almost always means soft poos.  She has had on and off problems with soft poos since she was a puppy - and she's also one of those dogs that will throw up bile if she goes too long without eating. I think she is just one of those dogs whose digestive system is a bit dodgy, nothing major thankfully.  However, she's been great on Naturediet with a little added wheat bran and so now I'm back to finding something that will suit her just as well.

I am not totally convinced it was the JWB Duck that caused her problems now, it may just have been a concidence.  However, it's easy enough to use a different variety, because I would rather not risk going through this again.

Have you tried Burgess Supadog Sensitive ? (complete dry) - it's main ingredients are lamb & rice.It is gluten & dairy free. I have a GSD who had the problems your dog had. I have posted about this food before, recently I recommended to Jack29 & he said it also suits his dog. I have been feeding it for about 18 months now & have not looked back. If you do a search for posts relating to this food, this may help.

Thanks Beardy.  No, I have not tried Supadog.  I'll keep in on my list of dry completes to try if Abby does not tolerate my next choice very well.   I am so apprehensive about going back to JWB that I picked up a bag of Arden Grange at the supermarket yesterday.  This time though, I'm going to switch foods gradually, as she's back to normal in the poop department, but still on the Hills I/D and the probiotic.

I had a GSD that had much the same problem years ago and I tried just about every food on the market.   She was very good on Purina Pro Plan, but to be honest I'm not sure if it was the food or just that as she grew older the problem disappeared.
