So I have a few questions :)

1. When did you first own a dog?
2. What is the most you have ever had ever or now ?
3. How many breeds do you own , ever or now?
4. Do you breed ?
5. How many of the breeds you own do you show?
6. How many of your dogs are kept in kennels or in the house?
7. How many litters do you ever have from one bitch?
8. So are genetics, looks ( eg. if my bitch has short legs compared to the breed standard do I get a sire that has legs that are longer to try and get it right) , the amount of show CH, FTCH etc in both the sire and Dam. Please put the three things in order and explain why :)
9. If anybody says to you by the way I am not a Puppy farmer what would you think :)

Thanks as this is going to help me in an investigation I am going to do :)

WOW that is a lot of questions but:
1. My first dog I owned was a Springer Spaniel and I was in Senior School her name was Sabba which is African for 5th borne - she was wonderful a failed gundog and given to me by a close family friend. She got hit by a car and I don't think I ever got over her. I walked her and fed her - she was wonderful.
2. 5 - which we have now!
3. 3 breeds all Setters - 1 Irish, 1 English and 3 Gordons
4. Not yet but maybe in about 5-6 years when I have gained alot more knowledge! and maybe not if I dont' think I have gained the knowledge!
5. 1 breed - Gordons - I did buy my English but he sadly only ever dropped one of his manly bits (sorry bit prudish!!)
6. All dogs are currently kept in house but I am looking at a kennel for when we get back from damp winter walks - but probably will never do it!
7. n/a
8. n/a
9. n/a

Hope this is some useful info for you Lucy!

Thanks Rachel

Can anybody else that is kind enough top reply copy and paste the questions then put your answer next to it as it is easier to read and collate the info :D

1. When did you first own a dog?
When I lived at home with my parents. I was 15 at the time.

2. What is the most you have ever had ever or now ?
Now, I have four

3. How many breeds do you own , ever or now?
I currently have one breed (aussies) but used to have two (GSD and aussies)

4. Do you breed ?
No, I haven't done........

5. How many of the breeds you own do you show?
One, and only one out of the four dogs.

6. How many of your dogs are kept in kennels or in the house?
All currently in the house.

7. How many litters do you ever have from one bitch?
Haven't bred, but wouldn't personally have more than two.

8. So are genetics, looks ( eg. if my bitch has short legs compared to the breed standard do I get a sire that has legs that are longer to try and get it right) , the amount of show CH, FTCH etc in both the sire and Dam. Please put the three things in order and explain why
Genetics are the most important....... knowing what health problems are in my breed, I like to see where any problems are in the pedigree.
I don't really care for titles and looks are a personal preference..... A dog can be ugly or beautiful, short legged or long legged, bad bite or good bite........ I would love them either way. There is one thing that I also want in my dogs and that is GOOD temperament.

9. If anybody says to you by the way I am not a Puppy farmer what would you think
I would give the person the benefit of the doubt until I had seen the puppy farming for myself.

Hope that helps,

Sorry! also just reread the last few questions!

Re: Question 9 9. If anybody says to you by the way I am not a Puppy farmer what would you think

I would certainly think mmmmm why say that - an interesting thing to bring up - might also dig deeper to understand if this is actually a cover up and they are.

All the best Lucy,

Rach

1. When did you first own a dog?
I first had a dog when IO bought a puppy of an old Irish chap who lived in our village for my Mum's Birthday  I was about 14  The pup was a GSD X JR . It got taken back within a couple of hours as my Dad had a paddy fit  He was actually quite right in doing it
2. What is the most you have ever had ever or now ?
We had 4 Labs one of which was a rescue :)
3. How many breeds do you own , ever or now?
Only one Labs :)
4. Do you breed ?
I have had one litter from my first bitch :)
5. How many of the breeds you own do you show?
None yet but this is part of what I am doing , information gathering :)
6. How many of your dogs are kept in kennels or in the house?
All in the house now but used to have Mars and Min my two oldies when they were young in a purpose built kennel and run :)
7. How many litters do you ever have from one bitch?
Only the one :)
8. So are genetics, looks ( eg. if my bitch has short legs compared to the breed standard do I get a sire that has legs that are longer to try and get it right) , the amount of show CH, FTCH etc in both the sire and Dam. Please put the three things in order and explain why
I put this into my sires breeders hands. She looked at Mars first, slated her as she was from American stock  Then after I had got over that she thought Mars was not right she said she had look into the genetics and had come to one of her Studs.

I never at that time knew really anything about the show implications on winning on a pedigree as had been told that the breeder of the sire was one of the top breeders :) Luckily I was right

9. If anybody says to you by the way I am not a Puppy farmer what would you think

They wouldn't as don't breed at the mo but have had that questioned by somebody I have been talking to and have spoken in length tonight  Gathering info now ;)

9. If anybody says to you by the way I am not a Puppy farmer what would you think
I would think they probably were as there would be no need to mention it ordinarily.
- By kerrib Date 14.08.06 20:26 UTC
Hi. I'm afraid that most of my answers are very straight forward but hopefully they will help you!

1. When did you first own a dog?
I badgered my parents for almost a year until they let me have my first dog when I was 11, on the proviso that I paid for the licence!

2. What is the most you have ever had ever or now ?
Marmaduke was my first and only dog until 4 mths ago when we got Misty.

3. How many breeds do you own , ever or now?
Marmies was a x spaniel/lab and Misty is a GR.

4. Do you breed ?
No and not planning on breeding either.

5. How many of the breeds you own do you show?
we brought Misty purely as a pet but we also think that as she is on the large size in height etc compared to the breed standard we probably couldn't anyway.

6. How many of your dogs are kept in kennels or in the house?
Both Marmadule and misty were kept in the house although neither were allowed upstairs or on the furniture.

7. How many litters do you ever have from one bitch?
Doesn't apply as I don't breed but if I did, probably 2 litters max.

8. So are genetics, looks ( eg. if my bitch has short legs compared to the breed standard do I get a sire that has legs that are longer to try and get it right) , the amount of show CH, FTCH etc in both the sire and Dam. Please put the three things in order and explain why
I think genetics should be the most important thing as some breeds are prone to certain disorders etc and considering the genetic make up would help to reduce this with careful breeding. Obviously the shows plays a good part if you require an indication whether a litter would be close to the breed standard but then the same can be said of the looks and as I dont really know anything about breeding and showing etc I haven't a clue which order those 2 should come in. Sorry:rolleyes:

9. If anybody says to you by the way I am not a Puppy farmer what would you think
I would have to question why they said that but I would certainly be thinking on the negative side.

1. When did you first own a dog?
1985 - a mutt, very closely followed by a Ridgeback

2. What is the most you have ever had ever or now ?
Highest number at once 7 - currently 6 but trying to sort out getting number 7

3. How many breeds do you own , ever or now?
2 - mainly Ridgebacks and one Australian Shepherd

4. Do you breed ?
Yes, occassionally

5. How many of the breeds you own do you show?
Mainly the Ridgebacks but I have shown my Aussie

6. How many of your dogs are kept in kennels or in the house?
All in the house

7. How many litters do you ever have from one bitch?
Maximum 3 but most of my bitches have only had one litter

8. So are genetics, looks ( eg. if my bitch has short legs compared to the breed standard do I get a sire that has legs that are longer to try and get it right) , the amount of show CH, FTCH etc in both the sire and Dam. Please put the three things in order and explain why
1. Temperament - hopefully self explanatory ) Really I think these two are of equal importance
2. Health - also hopefully health explanatory )
Then if both of those are satisfactory -
3. Looks
4. Titles - a title does not mean that a dog is the best mate for your bitch.

9. If anybody says to you by the way I am not a Puppy farmer what would you think
I'd wonder why they felt the need to say it!
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 14.08.06 20:46 UTC
1. When did you first own a dog?
The first one I remember us getting was when I was 5, although we'd had one previously. The first one I owned myself (rather than our family dog) was when I was 15.

2. What is the most you have ever had ever or now ?
We've had 5 adults at one time, although the total has been higher (11) when you include litters as well.

3. How many breeds do you own , ever or now?
3 pedigree breeds and a mongrel.

4. Do you breed ?
Not any more. At the moment. Never say never!

5. How many of the breeds you own do you show?
1.

6. How many of your dogs are kept in kennels or in the house?
All in the house.

7. How many litters do you ever have from one bitch?
2.

8. So are genetics, looks ( eg. if my bitch has short legs compared to the breed standard do I get a sire that has legs that are longer to try and get it right) , the amount of show CH, FTCH etc in both the sire and Dam. Please put the three things in order and explain why
1. Genetics; that includes temperament
2. Looks. If it doesn't have spots, it's not a dalmatian! :D
3. The amount of red is immaterial; it only proves that the owner is interested in showing/working/trialling. The animal would be of exactly the same genetic quality if it never saw a showring.

9. If anybody says to you by the way I am not a Puppy farmer what would you think
"Methinks you protest too much." ;)
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 14.08.06 21:17 UTC
Additional info to #3: the three pedigree breeds are Cocker Spaniel, Labrador and Dalmatian. The mongrel's dam's parentage was one of the world's great mysteries (reputedly featuring corgi and whippet; she closely resembled a fox), though his sire was a labrador.
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 15.08.06 10:27 UTC
Ooh, and another clarification (thanks for the reminder, Goldmali!); the first dog who was my very own when I was 15 was bought back in 1973. :) I now have two of her great-great-great-grandsons. :)
- By Goldmali Date 14.08.06 21:01 UTC
1. When did you first own a dog?
When I was 15, but had dogs in the family before then that I spent a lot of time with -i.e. grandparents, aunts etc.

2. What is the most you have ever had ever or now ?
Have 9 dogs now and that is the max in the past as well.

3. How many breeds do you own , ever or now?
Have owned Golden Retrievers, Malinois, Cocker Spaniel, Cavaliers, Papillon, Border Collies and crossbreeds. Currently have GR, M, CKCS, Pap & x.

4. Do you breed ?
Yes.

5. How many of the breeds you own do you show?
At the moment I only show (and breed) Malinois. Have however in the past shown Goldens and Cavaliers, and am hoping to get another Papillon to show.

6. How many of your dogs are kept in kennels or in the house?
All in the house.

7. How many litters do you ever have from one bitch?
3.

8. So are genetics, looks ( eg. if my bitch has short legs compared to the breed standard do I get a sire that has legs that are longer to try and get it right) , the amount of show CH, FTCH etc in both the sire and Dam. Please put the three things in order and explain why
1. Genetics which includes health and temperament. 2. Looks 3. Number of Champions in my breed's pedigrees totally irrelevant as we do not yet have any Champions in the breed in the UK. :)

9. If anybody says to you by the way I am not a Puppy farmer what would you think
A responsible breeder would not have to point it out, it should be obvious.
- By perrodeagua [gb] Date 14.08.06 21:55 UTC
1. When did you first own a dog? My own dog I got when I was 9, my brother was seriously ill and I'd been here and there whilst my parents were with him in Liverpool. He had a Rough Collie of his own so they said that I could have a dog. I wanted a Yorkie but my parents said that they were common so got a Pomeranian instead :d

2. What is the most you have ever had ever or now ? 5

3. How many breeds do you own , ever or now? Well my parents had Rough Collies and Shelties and after them went onto Pomeranian's. I brought the SWD's into the houlsehold almost 14 years ago and haven't looked back!

4. Do you breed ? Yes

5. How many of the breeds you own do you show? One, the Spanish Water Dogs, although I do help my mum out with her Pomeranian's and I'm hoping to show one of her latest pups if he turns out nice enough.

6. How many of your dogs are kept in kennels or in the house? They are all in the house.

7. How many litters do you ever have from one bitch? Three

8. So are genetics, looks ( eg. if my bitch has short legs compared to the breed standard do I get a sire that has legs that are longer to try and get it right) , the amount of show CH, FTCH etc in both the sire and Dam. Please put the three things in order and explain why 1st genetics, just think it[s extremely important. 2nd looks, have to be truthful here, but also the looks of any offspring from the said dogs being used. 3rd champions etc. Doesn't always mean to say that you'll end up with a champion. Also it depends upon the temperament of the stud and his background.

9. If anybody says to you by the way I am not a Puppy farmer what would you think Ahhh, well ! Depends on what some people class as a puppy farmer? I would class someone who although may not have loads of litters a year, but you can tell that they are more interested in the money and the glory rather than the breed as being a puppy farmer!

It's hard to classify really, what the true meaning of "puppy farming" is.

1. When did you first own a dog?
When i was 16 :) (omg thats ten years ago!)

2. What is the most you have ever had ever or now ?
Five. Currently have four.

3. How many breeds do you own , ever or now?
er, technically, none.... four x breeds (one small beddy x whippet style lurcher, one large saluki x grey longdog, one collie/springer/gsd <its a Deutsche Sprolliehund innit> and one staffie x thing) but then four cos they all different!

4. Do you breed ?
Nope.

5. How many of the breeds you own do you show?
None (well, lurcher shows but i dont think you mean that, in which case two)

6. How many of your dogs are kept in kennels or in the house?
All in house, boys upstairs at night, bitch downstairs she likes her beauty sleep.

7. How many litters do you ever have from one bitch?
If i bred, 2, 3 for exceptional circumstances.

8. So are genetics, looks ( eg. if my bitch has short legs compared to the breed standard do I get a sire that has legs that are longer to try and get it right) , the amount of show CH, FTCH etc in both the sire and Dam. Please put the three things in order and explain why :-)
Genetics, conformation (after all.... genetically free of disease doesnt mean a dog isnt put together like a bag of spanners!), TEMPERAMENT and then showing related stuff (paying attention to 'flavour of the month trends' in the breed relevant and also 'popular sire syndrome' as well)

9. If anybody says to you by the way I am not a Puppy farmer what would you think :-)
Id think they had something to hide or felt a reason to state this.... would want to check them out further but would be on 'blue alert'...

9. If anybody says to you by the way I am not a Puppy farmer what would you think I would wonder why they felt the need to say that!

(1) temperament (2) closeness to breed standard (wouldn't chose closeness to breed standard if temperament wasn't right) (3)then winners

9. If anybody says to you by the way I am not a Puppy farmer what would you think
Alarm bells would ring - "methinks the lady doth protest too much" - I'd do a bit of investigating to settle in my own mind whether or not s/he was!

1. When did you first own a dog?
The first 'family' dog was bought in 1985 - a b&w ESS called Louis. I bought my first Large Munsterlander at the end of 1987.

2. What is the most you have ever had ever or now ?
Most I've owned at one time was 4, presently I have 3. If I had more room I could live with 7-8 quite happily.

3. How many breeds do you own , ever or now?
Just the 1 breed although I like a few others I don't know if I'd ever own another breed.

4. Do you breed ?
Very occasionally - 3 litters in 18 years, last one in 2002.

5. How many of the breeds you own do you show?
Only 1 breed.

6. How many of your dogs are kept in kennels or in the house?
All indoors!

7. How many litters do you ever have from one bitch?
I think 2 litters from a bitch are ample. If she can't produce you good puppies in 2 litters (To 2 different males), why do you need to breed 3, 4 or 5?

8. So are genetics, looks ( eg. if my bitch has short legs compared to the breed standard do I get a sire that has legs that are longer to try and get it right) , the amount of show CH, FTCH etc in both the sire and Dam. Please put the three things in order and explain why?
Conformation plays a big part in my choice of stud dog. My breed is not brilliant in several departments and I am very particular when coming to chose a dog. I am very aware of my breeds problem areas and I try to minimise on doubling up on these with my bitch & dog. Because of my real fussiness, sadly I can't find a stud to cover my 5yo Sh.Ch. bitch. I have to like the stud dog too, if I've seen him in his home enviroment and he appeals there, that's a good sign. I'm not bothered by the amount of red in a pedigree, as has been seen many times 2 Sh.Ch.'s/Ch.'s mated together can produce a mediocre litter. There have to be lines in a pedigree that appeal to me, I've now been around long enough in my breed that I can remember some of the dogs that are sitting in generation 4-5 and they can play some significance too. I spend an awful lot of time trying to familiarise myself with dogs & bloodlines around the world especially since the advent of the PP scheme - and I think the KC should really lighten it's rules up on AI again.

9. If anybody says to you by the way I am not a Puppy farmer what would you think?

Depends on what breed they owned & if I knew their breeding/rehome record.

1. When did you first own a dog?
When I was 14 got my first dog - dobermann (16 years ago)

2. What is the most you have ever had ever or now ?
Have 3 at the present the most I've ever owned

3. How many breeds do you own , ever or now?
Have owned, dobermann, english springer spaniel, heinz 57 (who knows what she was crossed with), now have 2 newfies and an ex racing greyhound

4. Do you breed ?
No, looks like to much hard work leave that to the people who know what they are doing!

5. How many of the breeds you own do you show?
Dont show any

6. How many of your dogs are kept in kennels or in the house?
All in the house - well when I can persuade the newfs to come in out of the rain.

7. How many litters do you ever have from one bitch?

8. So are genetics, looks ( eg. if my bitch has short legs compared to the breed standard do I get a sire that has legs that are longer to try and get it right) , the amount of show CH, FTCH etc in both the sire and Dam. Please put the three things in order and explain why
I went with looks for my newfs to find the lines I liked then made sure they had the right genetics, scores on tests before I decided to have a puppy, the greyhound was given to me as he had been rehomed to someone else first and they prefer not to put them back in kennels if they can avoid it. He came on a trial basis and has been with us nearly two years.:)

1. When did you first own a dog?
Our family always had a JR around when I was growing up and the first dog I had was a JR x Patterdale when I was 19.

2. What is the most you have ever had ever or now ?
Currently have 5, which is the most we have had apart from when Freya had her 12 pups which gave us 17 in total

3. How many breeds do you own , ever or now?
We currently have 3, 2 Weimaraners, 2 Danes, 1 Ridgeback (rescue). Before the current gang I had an ESS x BC (the most gorgeous looking and loyal dog ever) and an ESS.

4. Do you breed ?
Have had one litter, but do not intend to do it again.

5. How many of the breeds you own do you show?
Have 'dabbled' with one breed, but not to any high level. More down to me not having time than the qualities of the dog.

6. How many of your dogs are kept in kennels or in the house?
All kept out in the stable block since we moved.

7. How many litters do you ever have from one bitch?
1

8. So are genetics, looks ( eg. if my bitch has short legs compared to the breed standard do I get a sire that has legs that are longer to try and get it right) , the amount of show CH, FTCH etc in both the sire and Dam. Please put the three things in order and explain why
Temperament would be paramount to me when choosing a dog to join our family. Looks and pedigree would be un-important. If choosing a dog to show, then obviously temperament and 'looks' (ie breed standard) are important. The number of Sh Ch etc on the pedigree is not particularly important in my opinion.

9. If anybody says to you by the way I am not a Puppy farmer what would you think
I would wonder why they felt the need to say that. It would definately set the alarm bells ringing, but I would reserve judgement until I had visited their home.

Addendum to mine -first dog when I was 15 means 25 years ago. (But I still swear I am 38!! :D )

. When did you first own a dog?
When I was with my parents I would have been about 13

2. What is the most you have ever had ever or now ?
Only 1

3. How many breeds do you own , ever or now?
I!

4. Do you breed ?
No

5. How many of the breeds you own do you show?
None

6. How many of your dogs are kept in kennels or in the house?
All in house

7. How many litters do you ever have from one bitch?
Haven't bred

8. So are genetics, looks ( eg. if my bitch has short legs compared to the breed standard do I get a sire that has legs that are longer to try and get it right) , the amount of show CH, FTCH etc in both the sire and Dam. Please put the three things in order and explain why

Genetics are the most important I would like to have healthy dogs with a good temperment
Looks - if I have a pedigree dog I'd like it to look like the standard but I don't show so it's not essential
CH, FTCH etc not interested in showing so not important to me

9. If anybody says to you by the way I am not a Puppy farmer what would you think
If I werelooking for a new dog I'd be going through breed clubs etc so it would probably ring a few alarm bells, but I'd give the benefit of the doubt until I'd seen wherethe dogs were bred

I don't really know enough about breeding to comment, but I would imagine genetics are very important, especially in breeds prone to certain hereditary conditions.

9. If anybody says to you by the way I am not a Puppy farmer what would you think

I would wonder why they felt the need to make a point out of it - it would definately make me feel a bit suspicious

1. When did you first own a dog?
My Dad bought me a Rhodesian Ridgeback puppy when I was 6, so that would be 1979.

2. What is the most you have ever had ever or now ?
2 dogs at one time.

3. How many breeds do you own , ever or now?
In 1984 I had the RR and a mongrel (we think he was a Lurcher BC cross - came from the RSPCA). Now I have an RR.

4. Do you breed ?
No.

5. How many of the breeds you own do you show?
I take my RR to fun shows, but don't show seriously.

6. How many of your dogs are kept in kennels or in the house?
My RR is kept in the house.

7. How many litters do you ever have from one bitch?

9. If anybody says to you by the way I am not a Puppy farmer what would you think
IMHO, no serious breeder has any need to say they are not a puppy farmer. If someone said that to me I would immediately be suspicious.

1. When did you first own a dog?
My 1st "own" dog I owned as an Adult was a boxer, still my favorite breed. I grew up with terriers, a GSD, and a boxer over the 20 years with my folks

2. What is the most you have ever had ever or now ?
6

3. How many breeds do you own , ever or now?
2

4. Do you breed ?
yes occasionally

5. How many of the breeds you own do you show?
1, The breed I show is the only one I have bred from. You should add that to your question list.

6. How many of your dogs are kept in kennels or in the house?
Mine all go between their run during the day and house, they sleep in the house well my grooming room but it's part of the house

7. How many litters do you ever have from one bitch?
[i]Of the few litters I have had only 1 bitch has had 2 litters,She produced a show quality for me in both. First litter she produced was all dogs hence her 2nd litter which produce 1 puppy bitch , which I currently show. The others have only had 1 litter which I have kept something from each time.

8. So are genetics, looks ( eg. if my bitch has short legs compared to the breed standard do I get a sire that has legs that are longer to try and get it right) , the amount of show CH, FTCH etc in both the sire and Dam. Please put the three things in order and explain why :-)
I would never breed from anything I didn't consider a good example of the breed regardless how stuck I was for something to show from their offspring. 1) Health, Temperament & Quality all equally and not one without the other

9. If anybody says to you by the way I am not a Puppy farmer what would you think :-)
Depends on why they felt the need to say it. We all seem to have a different opinion of what is or what isn't acceptable. I don't think ANY breeder good or bad should have a litter just for the sake of a litter. I also think as breed guardians we should really only have litters when we need to. Some of the breeds as you know are over saturated regardless of quality or who is producing them. There are just too many

HTHs :-D

Firstly Temperament of Bitch-obvious but no bitch with a poor temperament should be bred from
2nd-Health-both clinical & genetical must be as good as possible
3rd-Typical of the breed/ability to do the work the breed was bred for & pedigree should go hand in hand
9. Run a mile as they almost certainly are a PF

1. When did you first own a dog?
I rescued a miniature dachund when I was a Veterinary Nurse. About a year after I was married and husband started shift work, which meant that the dog wasn't left all day.

2. What is the most you have ever had ever or now ?
I have kept up to 6 at one time. Not now though.

3. How many breeds do you own , ever or now?
My first dog was an Afghan. Now Rough Collies - very different! ;)

4. Do you breed ?
Yes.

5. How many of the breeds you own do you show?
I show the one breed that I own.

6. How many of your dogs are kept in kennels or in the house?
All kept indoors. When I kept more dogs I did have kennels for when I was working (parlour window openeing into the run!) or when I was out for the day.

7. How many litters do you ever have from one bitch?
Depends entirely on the bitch. Champion bitch hated having pups so she only had the one litter. Her Granddaughter, Didgy thought that she was put on this earth to have puppies. She popped then out like shelling peas, didn't lose any body or condition and produced quality pups. If one of the others had pups, she'd produce milk regardless of her own cycle and feed and clean them all. I have manypictures of two bitches in the whelping box! She was the only bitch who had 4 litters and she is behind the lines of other exhibitors. Normally though, probably two litters maximum. If they haven't produced anything good enough in two litters, then they're probably not going to.

8. So are genetics, looks ( eg. if my bitch has short legs compared to the breed standard do I get a sire that has legs that are longer to try and get it right) , the amount of show CH, FTCH etc in both the sire and Dam. Please put the three things in order and explain why
Temperament is my first priority. For each pup that I keep or others keep to show, the rest must be good companions. Health is next - a dog is no use to anyone if he is constantly needing the Vet! Quality next, because I expect all of my pups to be good representatives of their breed. Having put them in order I wouldn't breed from any dog that didn't have all three! :)
if my bitch has short legs compared to the breed standard do I get a sire that has legs that are longer to try and get it right
PS If your bitch has short legs then you need a sire with the correct length of legs - not longer - or you'll end up with some pups with long legs and some pups with short legs! ;)

9. If anybody says to you by the way I am not a Puppy farmer what would you think
MMmmmmmm.....right! ;)

1. When did you first own a dog?
We got Chloe when I was 13, before that I spent alot of time with my grandfathers dog and also walked a neighbours dog.

2. What is the most you have ever had ever or now ?
Three..thats quite enough for the moment!

3. How many breeds do you own , ever or now?
Two, Hungarian Vizsla and Hungarian Wirehaired Vizsla

4. Do you breed ?
Nearly, once but no!

5. How many of the breeds you own do you show?
Both, one of the HVs occassionally and the HWV more often.

6. How many of your dogs are kept in kennels or in the house?
All in the house.

7. How many litters do you ever have from one bitch?
N/A but 2 or 3 at the most, dependant on anumber of things.

8. So are genetics, looks ( eg. if my bitch has short legs compared to the breed standard do I get a sire that has legs that are longer to try and get it right) , the amount of show CH, FTCH etc in both the sire and Dam. Please put the three things in order and explain why
1. Genetics, health and temperament, paramount! 2. Looks, we should be trying to improve the breed with each mating, otherwise why bother?! 3. HWVs are a rare breed so not relevant but even if we did then it doesn't mean the pair will be a good match.

9. If anybody says to you by the way I am not a Puppy farmer what would you think
I would be cynical and think, well, you probably are! If they need to point it out thats not a good sign, it should be obvious.
- By Lily Mc [gb] Date 15.08.06 09:54 UTC
1. When did you first own a dog?
When I was 16, put it on kitchen floor and hoped my Mum wouldn't make me get rid of it. Stupid Marina LOL!

2. What is the most you have ever had ever or now ?
Most I've had is 3 adults, which is what I have now (well, 3 and a half if you count the one in partnership).

3. How many breeds do you own , ever or now?
Have owned Rough Collies and a Dobermann. Dobe unfortunately had to go at 6 months as despite the fact she had a superb temperament, she was not compatible with a very submissive Rough Collie, and I feared for how it would turn out as she got older. Has made sure that any breeds I consider in the future must be carefully considered for compatibility as well as all other areas.

4. Do you breed ?
Very occasionally (2 litters in 10 years, or thereabouts, although a few other tries have failed).

5. How many of the breeds you own do you show?
I show the Rough Collies.

6. How many of your dogs are kept in kennels or in the house?
All indoors, although previous dogs have slept outside at night.

7. How many litters do you ever have from one bitch?
Have only had one litter from a bitch, although have tried for a second.

8. So are genetics, looks ( eg. if my bitch has short legs compared to the breed standard do I get a sire that has legs that are longer to try and get it right) , the amount of show CH, FTCH etc in both the sire and Dam. Please put the three things in order and explain why
Have no interest in 'the latest Champion', would rather look at the pedigree including health and temperament.

Feel the need to point out that if your bitch has short legs, you don't put her to a sire with long legs to balance it - sure Lucy knows this and it's just in the phrasing, but for others who may be reading and misconstrue ... where you have a fault, you select a dog which excels in the area the bitch fails in, not one that goes to the opposite extreme.

9. If anybody says to you by the way I am not a Puppy farmer what would you think
I'd wonder why they felt the need to raise the subject and investigate further.

1. When did you first own a dog?
- My parents had BSD and a BSD x GSD before him (that we stole from the neighbour on account of them leaving him in his pen far too often for far too long. :() so we didn't had a dog until I was about 15 (my dad was in the army)
2. What is the most you have ever had ever or now ?
- Just the one. Considering another when this one gets a bit older.
3. How many breeds do you own , ever or now?
-1 but likeing the look of a few others.
4. Do you breed ?
- Dear god no. I couldn't take the stress. ;)
5. How many of the breeds you own do you show?
- None, but I'm reading a lot about showing at the moment.....
6. How many of your dogs are kept in kennels or in the house?
- She lives with us in the house.
7. How many litters do you ever have from one bitch?

9. If anybody says to you by the way I am not a Puppy farmer what would you think
- I'd ask them what they would define as a puppy farmer, then to define thier own circunstances and see if either it matched with my own (correct and researched) opinion of a puppy farmer and make my own decision.
- By Dawn-R Date 15.08.06 10:22 UTC
1 I owned my first dog when I was 4 years old, he was a mongrel called Whiskey. I bought my first dog when I was 12, she was a Labrador (Yellow) called Jay.

2 The most I ever owned at one time is right now, I have 7, 6 American Cockers and an Irish Setter.

3 I have had three separate breeds and a mutt, in my lifetime.

4 I have bred one litter there were two puppies born, both bitches, and I kept them both. I loaned an Irish Setter bitch back to her breeder once back in the 1970s.

5 Both. I only have one Yankee in full coat the others being clipped off, and my Irish Setter is now doing well in Veteran classes.

6 All mine sleep out in the kennel, and stay out most of the day in the run, when they are wet and covered in mud but they are in the house in the evening.

7 Mostly zero, but never had more than just the one litter, from those that were bred from in the past.

8 I would never breed from a bitch that had not had some show ring success, most bitches are just not good enough, and I'd choose to line breed to a dog that was my idea of the standard. So both would have to have correct length legs :) amongst other things. I must admit I do like to see qiute a bit of red on a pedigree, silly I know, but I just do, especially close up to the front. :D Arn't I fickle.

9 If someone made a point of saying that they were not a puppy farmer, I'd be fairly sure they probably were.

1. When did you first own a dog?
Family had a Scottie when I was very small - she had been given to us by an aunt - her last breeding bitch - she developed mammary cancer and my mother wouldn't have another dog after this :( Had to borrow my (different) aunt's beagle whom I grew up with from 7 to 24 :) Had 'my own' dog in 1999 which was the first chance to have a dog that could be looked after properly :)
