I mated my bitch approx 5 weeks ago & took her for a scan on Tuesday to confirm her pregnancy however much to my dismay they couldnt find any pups whatsoever.
She was mated on day 14 & 16 of her season and tied with the stud for 15 mins each time.
I was just wondering if anyone knows what could have happened for her not to be pregnant this time.This was her first mating.
Her season did seem to go on a little longer than usual after her mating, there was a watery bloodstained discharge for at least a week/ten days after.
Any tips for the next time pre season or whatever...

Is the stud dog proven?  If so, has he sired a litter recently? 

The timing could have been wrong.  There could be several reasons.

to be perfectly honest with you I cannot remember if i was told that the stud dog was proven,I believe he was.The owners have a reputable kennel and I had the pick of 3 studs.
I am very dissapointed as you can imagine and have to wait another 6 months now.
Are scans completely accurate, I assume that they are.I am secretely hoping that there is one little one hiding behind an organ!!!

A bitch was scanned after coming to my dog a few years ago and her owners were told there were no pups.  She bled a bit and they were a bit worried.  She had 8 puppies!  However, I wouldn't raise your hopes too much.

As Ridgie says there can be many reasons, I would double check that the stud is proven though and if not ask to use a different one next time, (if another of them should match to your bitch)

Has your bitch shown any other signs of pregnancy at all? I don't rate scans I am afraid, they are useless at getting the numbers anywhere near correct, but I am sure that your vet did a physical check and used his stethoscope to listen for heart beats too, so it is unlikely he will have missed with all 3 checks. (Not impossible, but very unlikely)

Keep an eye on your girl though, but it looks as though you will just have to wait a little longer. I have my fingers crossed for your girls next mating and once again, really sorry it hasn't happend this time.

Unfortunately my bitch has shown no signs, but then to be perfectly honest I dont really know what to look for, hence the scan.She is behaving perfectly normally, however the vet did point out that he thought that her nipples were quite large and he thought that maybe she was going to have a false pregnancy, her nipples have always been quite large and once before a few years ago my vet said that he thought she was having a phantom pregnancy, i couldnt tell any difference whatsoever, his reason was that she had a secretion from her nipples when squeezed, i can say that i do not go around squeezing my dog's nipples at any time of the year!!
I am very sad that we have no pregnancy as i have been planning things like names for puppies, pricing all the things that i would need for possible whelping and so on...
Its been keeping me busy on the internet for the last few weeks, and it was something to look forward to..

my bitch was 4 years old a few days ago, I thought that this was neither too young or too old for breeding.

As long as she is fit, I would have thought 4 was fine.  More than one of my breed clubs recommends not breeding a first litter after 4, but so much depends on the individual bitch.

maybe you just missed her? my friends dog missed first time, she was advised to get her mated on the 9th day and 12th, so the second time she had a pre-mate test and she didn't ovulate until day 14 which the stud dog owner thought unuasual, guess the bitch didn't read the book

It's possible that she was pregnant, but reabsorbed the pups :( I wonder if the recent heat has had anything to do with it? Just wondering. I had a bitch miss two seasons running, but I know that she was the problem, not the dog (scarring after a section) so gave up. Check to see if the stud dog has sired litters. I wouldn't necessarily go for a different dog next time, but would think about it.
