How much exercise does a fully grown english cocker need a day? Is a short daily walk adequate, with a medium sized garden to walk in during the day?

Hi Guest

I take my girls out for half an hour each night..I have always been told that cockers do not need *excessive* exercise, but as I mentioned to the other guest poster re: cockers, we have many cocker people on the board, who can offer advice from their experiences.

A full grown English Cocker will be happy with a half hour walk as long as you have plenty of garden room for him to tear around in and don't mind holes appearing and plants being uprooted etc etc. Similarly - they will take almost as much exercise you want to give them - especially if it means getting wet, muddy and dirty;) They like to run so it's running space and opportunity they need so depending on the lay-out of your garden it may or may not be enough to compliment a daily walk.

Size of garden is immaterial if you are not out there with them to play too. My cockers have just never bothered with the garden without me. People tell me their cockers are perfectly happy with moderate exercise but I have to say I have found mine to be pretty unsatified with less than an hour of free running a day, 2 hours suit them better and of course can cope easily with a day on the fells. A decent size garden is useful for a kick about with the football if for some reason a good walk is not available.

Buffy would run all day given the chance, when the gsds are tired and had enough she is still wizzing around wanting more, like i said before total maniac.

Have to say I agree with Isabelle - my Cockers like to run & half an hour's walk a day just wouldn't cut it with them:-) I see a lot of overweight Cockers & in many cases this is down to lack of exercise - one short walk a day isn't really good enough for an adult Cocker unless you have a reasonable-sized garden & can spend lots of time playing ball or something. My Cockers also don't really play in the garden unless someone is with them to engage their interest with a game - they are not really a breed that will entertain themselves in my experience.
