Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / GUEST MALE DOG PEEING AROUND THE HOUSE
- By swift [gb] Date 09.08.06 19:04 UTC
Hi

We are looking after a friends dog whilst she has gone on holiday,  he is a one year old, I already have a female dog who is 10 years old.

As soon as he arrived it peed several times, all day long it has been going around the house cocking it leg.
It is also jumping on top of my female dog, and she is not even in season.

Can anyone help?

regards

Thank goodness she isn't in season if your visiting dog is entire!

Given his age, however, his desire to make his mark on unfamiliar territory that's occupied by another dog isn't unusual. It doesn't make it acceptable though and you'll need to keep a very careful eye out for the first signs of his leg cocking and stop him before he gets started. Then take him outside straightaway and encourage him to wee somewhere that is acceptable.

You also need to clean up where he has widdled indoors with a solution of biological washing powder otherwise it'll smell like a dog's toilet and thus make for an attractive revisit!

Thanks for this, as above we are going to use a pop bottle to try to distract his behaviour, lets hope it does work, we have bought a solution to clean up after him from the pet shop, never thought to use the washing powder, great tip, thanks, lets hope we wont run out of the solution from the pet shop, or we will have to make the soap powder up...

thanks for your advice

My dog (entire) does this, or should I say tries to do this, in our house if another dog is visiting or in other people's houses if they have a dog or had a dog visiting.  A sharp word usually does it for mine but he's extremely territorial and is just trying to mark his scent.  Even outside he has to pee on every blade of grass another dog has been on.

Discourage it immediately and as stated, make sure you clean it up right away.

Someone hasn't house-trained him properly! Dogs (entire or not) need to be trained not to cock their legs inside anyones house, I've always had boys and none of them would mark in my house or a strangers.

Doesn't help you much now, but you need to treat him as you would a puppy. Make sure he has opportunity to go outside, confine him to a very small area, eg crate, when you can't be watching him and if you catch him in the act let him know it is wrong by interrupting him, you might need to shout, clap your hands, leap from your chair :-) but remember that the aim is not to terrify him! Only to stop him and use a tone of voice that shows you're not impressed.

Have now spotted that hes trying to mount your dog too. I'd use the same method, interrupt and remove him from the room and make sure he can't bother her when you're not around to supervise.

Maybe suggest to your friend that she trains him properly before she leaves him with you again, she might not be aware having never taken him to anyones house before, if she was aware of it it was a bit unfair.

Its also not essential that males stop every two feet on a walk to mark but a surprising number of owners let them do it.

Thanks a lot for your advise, he has continued to behave like this again today, we are going to try a pop bottle with stones in, and when he does this, shake the bottle, hopefully this will distract him from doing both:cool:

i dont think he has ever been left with anyone before, we have uncovered a little habit that he obviously has, hopefully not for much longer!!

he has not really been socialised with other dogs, and has been kept to a small group of family members?

i only hope he improves

Junior is intact and does not lift in my home at all, mind you my friend took him over night and when let out he lifted. I told them to keep him on leash so he knows to respect their house. Once I got there I leashed him for about a half and after that he was great. They have 2 males one intact and one altered, there's even still lift in their house

I would put him on a leash and teach him the rules of the house, it worked great with mine and I know I can trust him. I think the only reason why he lift was because their dogs have. They brought them to my house a couple times and they lifted here, my lil boy I was proud he never followed - good boy :)

my dog has only ever done this once in my neighbours house (also has an entire male!) I know most people on here won't agree but catching him in the act I was mortified that he was doing this, so I gave him a swift slap on the botty and hasten to add he has never repeated this again! (not that i am suggesting you to smack your friends dog :-) )

My dog has done it when we first rehomed him, the first time he came in the house and also the first time he set foot in my sisters house. I don't agree it's a house training issue with all dogs, as he has never repeated this.
