Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / english cocker spaniel ears
- By guest [ie] Date 20.08.02 17:07 UTC
I have recently been researching the english cocker spaniel breed as I am intrested in having one as a pet, through my reseach I have seen photos of the breed and I would like to know why the ears are set in different places in the same breed. In some of the dogs I've seen the ars are set very low, below the nose, but in others the ears are set above the nose or horizontal to it.

The ears should be set at the same level - ie - level with the eyes. However, Cockers, as all dogs, prick up their ears when they hear something interesting and that will cause them to look higher than they are and also the angle the photo is taken at will affect the look. Having said that - the set can differ and is indicative of possibly a badly matched dam and sire or just bad luck for the breeder.

Hi Guest

As Pammy has said the ears should be set level with the eyes.

The Cockers that you have seen where the ears seem to be higher or lower could be also down to how they have been trimmed. If the tops of the ears have been clippered off this will also give the appearance of the ears being lower.
