Topic Dog Boards / Health / Lymphoma ~ Any idea?
- By Harmony Date 01.08.06 13:03 UTC
I've had a very upset owner of one of Abbie's puppies on the phone today to tell me that Lexi is in the Vets :(

Lexi's owner had found a red lump on the front of her foreleg & after a couple of days of bathing & seeing no improvement took her down to the Vets to get it checked thinking it maybe a grass seed or a thorn.

The Vet has had Lexi under GA, no foreign bodies but, in his words, (I've heard the answerphone message) "he wanted permission to remove a larger margin as he's concerned at what look to be very sinister cells", Lexi's owner said on talking to the Vet, he's worried it is a cancerous lypoma.  I understand he'll be sending a sample off to Newmarket for further pathology.

Has anyone ever come across this?  Lexi is only just coming upto 8 months old so she's still just a baby.  Both Lexi's owner & I are really very worried.

Any idea's, help etc very welcome & please keep Lexi in your prayers.

Hi Lyndsay,

I can't offer any words of wisdom I'm afraid but Lexi is certainly officially on the prayer list.

Thinking of you all, Teri x

Was it lipoma or lymphoma? There's a really big difference. I've had a couple of lipomas, they're benign fatty lumps. The sinister cells are worrying but on first reading the description I was thinking lipoma. Lymphomas are usually cancers that begin in the immune system. We'll think positive thoughts that nothing is wrong Lexi and all the tests come back negative.

Sorry ~ yes Lipoma ~ damn spell checker   (I copied & pasted original without checking!)

I've just spoken again with Lexi's Mum Irene, she has an appointment with the Vet at 8pm & hopefully will also be able to bring Lexi home.

It really is a worrying time :(  Irene has said that the Vet can be a little over dramatic at times but having listened to his message, even I'm extremely worried.

I still find it hard to comprehend that an otherwise, fit & healthy puppy, could have something so awful at such a young age

I'll update when I hear any more.

I've just had a text message from Lexi's owner saying all of the test results are now in & it's good news!!

Both Irene & myself are understandably very relieved but also very cross with the Vet who I know has already partly apologised to Irene admitting he was being over dramatic!!  Irene tells me he will be getting a real rocket over this!!

It would have been kinder for him to say that he wasn't sure what it was, but that it's all removed & just to play it safe he'd send the sample off for histology not to tell poor Irene that he thought Lexi had cancer!!

Anyway, at least it's the good news we've all been waiting for :o)  Irene has asked that I thank everyone for their positive thoughts & good wishes, they meant a lot.

Thank you everyone.

Ahh BRILLIANT NEWS.

I'm glad it's good news but if he hadn't of given you the news that it may be cancer and prepared you for the worst wouldn't you have felt the same way if it had come back with that?   Some vets like to prepare people for every eventuality which I thinks good myself.  Yep, it makes it hard on us for the wait for the results, but at least then we are prepared if it is bad news.

Yes I understand I'm just cross in the way he dealt with some of it really.  I just feel he could have been a bit more careful with his choice of words but then maybe because she's one of "my babies" just makes me very sensitive

But thank you anyway :D

Delighted to hear that the results were good.

That is fantastic news Lyndsay. She's just a baby. Glad to hear little Lexi will be able to subject them to the teenager stage. ;-)
