Topic Dog Boards / Health / Swelling in pen*s

Sorry for the title, but didn't know what else to call it!

Our 17 month old Dalmatian was neutered back in February when he was 11 months (problems with recall and roaming).  All went fine but I noticed afterwards that on a couple of occasions when he got 'excited' there appeared to be swelling on ether side of the pen*s shaft, almost like two balls either side.  I've only seen it a couple of times and it didn't appear to be botherring him in any way, so didn't think that much about it.  My boyfriend is the one who lets him out of his crate in the morning and I've only just established that this swelling happens every morning when our lad wakes up and is erect down there.
We're worried that maybe it's blood leaking into an area that was ruptured after surgery...or some other problem linked to his op?  Just thought I'd post on here to see what you guys think as I don't want to go the the vets if it's nothing to worry about (I've only had bitches before!)

Thanks.

I think it is normal -- thats what causes the "tie" during mating.

LOLOLOLOL Sorry for laughing but it is quite normal & what you are seeing is the Bulbus Glandis Nothing to worry about at all, but don't feel silly for asking, better to ask & be reassured that no to ask & worry for nothing ;)

Moonmaiden - thanks!
I had a feeling it was normal, but it was my boyfriend who wanted me to take him to the vets to check.  I thought I'd post on here rather than embarrass myself at the vets!!

LOL I co owned some dogs with an "allegedly"experienced dog owner, She proudly told me one day she knew all the dog puppies we had in a litter were entire as she could see their testicles-only why were they half way down theit boy bit ? I had to bite my tongue & go to the loo before I enlightened her

I have just had a chuckle to myself too!! sorry :-D  I was in your shoes about 6 months ago when my boy had one of his cleaning frenzies and had a rather starnge looking purple item between his legs! I rang my breeder in a frantic panic lol and she put my mind at rest after rolling around the floor laughing!! boys eh no matter what species they are all the same :-P

I had a puppy owner get back to me once saying the exact same thing and if you dont know then its a valid question. I will admit the first time someone asked me, I did have a big smile on my face.

Somebody in dogs told one of my puppy owners that his dog had a cancerous tumour and that it wasn't normal, so they had the dog done!!  Just goes to show that not everybody realises that this is natural

I have to admit none of the books on breeding mention this aspect.  The bulbous glandis is mentioned in relation to mating.

I have ownerd bitches for nearly 20 years, and bred my first litter 11 years ago, but had never lived with a dog.

I have to say I didn't realise that the gland could swell whilst sheathed until I was grooming our imported boy about three years ago, and cupped my hand over the sheath (to protect it) while brushing his belly with a slicker.  I realised straight away what it was.

The first time I had ever seen the Bulbous glandis of a dog was when I was trying to mate my awkward bitch and the dog tied himself outside the bitch who had whipped away at the crucial moment.  I was gob-smacked as it looked for all the world like the dog had an extra set of balls

Brainless thats exactly what I rang my breeder asking, "why has my dog got 2 sets of balls lol" he cleans himself so avidly and has very bad masturbating tendencies  especially when there are visitors around  and he is in his cage to calm down! he seems to get himself worked up again lol :-P

My Mum has had male dogs all her life till now and she has a bitch. Twice lately she has asked me about the swelling on my male dogs Penis and I have told her it is normal without going into too much detail and trying not to laugh,I can't understand why she has never seen this in any of her dogs who were all entire. She is also under the impression my lad is very well endowed for a small dog, with nothing to compare with I couldn't reply to that statement.

It is difficult to chat to your 70yr old Mum about these things.

I worked in a vets for a while and a lady came in with her hamster, she was devestated, crying etc. because her hamster had grown huge tumours.  Her relief soon turned to embarassment when we told her about the birds and the bees.

Must admit to being worried when we had daughter's (and my) first baby hamster :D They mature sexually so quickly that we too thought that it had a problem there too (although I realised before the need to rush down to the vet's) :D :D
