Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / homing questions?

Can anyone tell me what sort of questions that someone should ask people when trying to find the right person to home a puppy to.
Years ago when i went to chose a puppy, I wasnt asked any questions, the people who i bought from just let us have our pup although we did spend a little while chatting generally so perhaps they used that to get a feel of what sort of owners we would make.
Want to get some expertise from other people.

I ask why they picked my breed, what previous dog experience they have, what their aims are (in my breed you can't just have a pet, you always do some form of work as well, usually agility or obedience), have they got other pets, children, is there somebody at home during the day etc -then usually once you get some of these answers more questions will follow on naturally, but those are the initial ones. Although I find that the best buyers are usually those that tell me all of this to start with, without having to be asked. :)

I think you have to decide for yourself what you think is important to provide a suitable home for your particular breed or even a particular puppy and ask questions relevent to that.  I would say, though, the way you ask can make a difference.  For instance, if it is important to you that they are not full time workers I find it pays to ask if they are both employed.  I find you are more likely to get an honest answer about their work patterns when they think you are asking about their solvency rather than how long they are all out the house ;)  Similarly you can learn a lot about their household, who's interesting in getting the dog, who's likely to do the grooming, walking etc if you engage in a general chatting conversation rather that firing off an interegation.  Softly, softly, catchy monkey :)

I think this may vary between breeds -you may need to take the soft approach with common breeds where people easily can go elsewhere. My tactics with puppies (rare breed) and kittens (NOT rare breeds but I'm pretty well established) is to try to put people OFF! :) So I find the ones not put off are the great ones that appreciate that my questioning means I care. :)

I meant capturing the answers not the people :)  What I aiming to do is avoid them giving you the answer they have percieved you are after rather than an honest one.  They certainly don't pass my criteria easily :)
