Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / chicken wings / thighs
- By bedford [gb] Date 29.07.06 17:32 UTC
Can anyone advise if it's only chicken wings that should be fed raw or are thighs/legs/portions ok as well. As I've only read about wings but have difficulty getting them I don't want to try any other part of the chicken without checking first. If thighs etc are not ok why would that be.

Many thanks

All bits of the chicken can be fed raw

ditto what MM has said, my boys get a whole chicken as a treat now and again :)

I think the reason that wings are suggested is that they have a higher proportion of bone in them than thighs.  I used to have to buy thighs occasionally when I couldn't get wings at the supermarket.  Now I have all mine delivered, much simpler.

Are chicken wings something you can feed everyday?

I give Earl a complete feed, plus fruit and veg as we have it (leftovers, etc), but I would love to give him something in addition to the occassional bone he gets from the butchers.

Thanks,
Helen

Hi Helen

Mine are on a BARF diet - they have chicken wings (or sometimes carcasses, or turkey necks) for their breakfast, then meat (mince or chunks of beef, or tripe, or lamb, etc, with offal added some of the time) and veg in the evenings.  My RR bitches have 3 or 4 depending on the sizes of them, and the boys 4 or 5.

Superb.  A trip to Morrissons is in order tomorrow I feel....... :-)
Thanks!

Wings are mentioned most because they are the part your least likely to want to eat yourself, and are probably the cheapest to buy.

Mine have chicken wings most of the time as that is what is cheapest and most readily available but they get legs/thighs etc if I can get them cheap enough ;)

Chicken necks are excellent too :) They have almost the perfect ratio of calc/phos and even the most inexperienced chewer can handle them. The bones are super soft and easy to digest.

Minny minsk mine get rmb's daily :)

I don't give mine wings anymore because they just don't chew them properly and I end up with pieces of bone being passed :-(  I did give them carcases but recently have moved on to legs and found morrisons the cheapest place for them as the do large packs with good sized legs in them. There is also a place called TPMS that I get all my offal and minced meats and  (really green!) tripe from that does whole chickens as well so I am going to try some from there. Unfortunately they only deliver to the Midlands South Wales and the West  Country so if you are not in their area that's no help to you! :-)

I prefer to mince chicken wings as Jasper tends to swallow them whole occasionally and it worries me that one could cause an obstruction - he's been OK up to now but it really makes me nervous when he is eating them!

Just looking through the tpms price list. The sliced liver/kidneys come in 1lb packs, how much would you give your dog per day/week? Does it matter if its pigs or lambs liver/kidneys? only mine can't eat lamb :(
- By colliemad Date 30.07.06 15:45 UTC Edited 30.07.06 15:50 UTC
Mine will only eat lambs liver so I get a whole one from the butcher and get him to slice it up for me and then I freeze it in small bags. I know the TPMS liver is whatever is available so you could end up with lambs. The only way to be sure is buy it from a butcher or supermarket. I don't give mine kidney as they just don't eat it but they do get the hearts from there and they are mad for the sliced tongues (yuk) :-D

edited to add: oops sorry forgot, I don't give mine much liver as they get whole fish once a week, usually 3/4 sardines but I have recently tried mackerel again and they only get one of those. I get the butcher to slice the liver up and freeze it in bags of three pieces which aren't very big and they get one piece each. They get more heart and tongue than liver HTH

I know mine have eaten kidneys in the past, horrid things but the dogs loved them  (this was before we went completely raw and before intolerances were known) As she can have pork I will definately buy the pigs liver/kidneys then, thanks. Never tried the tongue - ooer don't know if I could touch them, feel nauseous just thinking of it :P :P
edited: so liver once a week then, as well as kidneys once per week?
- By colliemad Date 30.07.06 15:55 UTC
sorry, forgot that bit too:rolleyes: mine probably get liver about once every couple of weeks I do keep trying with the kidneys but so far they are just wasted so I am not sure I will carry on, they get hearts twice a week and the tongues twice a week. The tongues are quite gross but they seem to like them and it's the only place I know that does them. Their green tripe is far worse than the tongues, the smell was so bad the first time it made me heave but I am used to it now LOL. Their economy mince is mostly lungs but I haven't tried it yet, got to ask them how much is lungs and how much is something else.

*insert greenfaced smiley*
the thought of cutting up tongue, or blending it is just turning my stomach  any other organ I can cope with, but yuk - no,  couldn't possibly

:P :P
- By colliemad Date 30.07.06 16:02 UTC
I don't cut them up, no way could I do that, yuk! I just give them to mine as they come, it says on the price list they are sliced but they are not very so they just get them shared out. It was a bit icky the first time but I got used to it, pigs feet and ears still make me cringe though, its the skin that does it

AAww Colliemad bless you :D You sound like such an excellent mum to your pups, putting your dogs health, happiness, and wellbeing way before your own.So many people wont feed their dogs naturally because they cant touch raw meat or liver etc. :( Then there's you who dishes out tongue and all sorts of delicacies not because you enjoy,or not, touching it,but because you know it's good for your dogs and is what they need, and you totally put your squeemishness aside, for them :)
I must admit i've looked at the tongues and ears at the butcher, but i cant do it.It takes all of my strength to serve up trotters and chicken feet(good source of glucosamine, and the dogs go crazy for them),and you should have seen me when i first started feeding liver, many, many years ago now,i was such a wimp!

I just wanted to let you know that your post really brought a smile to my face, and that your dogs are very lucky to have you :)

LOL :-D Thankyou Ktee :-D  They had fish last night and I have to look the other way with that too, can't stand the eyes looking at me, bleugh! Why do they always start with the head? And why does no-one warn you how crunchy they are........:-p
