Hi (first post!)
I own a soft coated wheaten terrier. Since we got her she has had a problem with itchy skin. About 20 days ago she developed lumps under her skin mainly on her chest above her front legs. The lumps turned to balck crusts which fell off & left her with hairless patches. The vet diagnosed the pyoderma linked to her first season (may) & shes was put on a 10 day course of antib's. That finished & she seemed to be healing well so he gave her another 10 day course. 5 Days into it she has develpoed more lumps, all over this time & shes more itchy than usual (head, armpits, chest). Shes also rubbing her head. We've got another visit booked on Monday but wondered if anyone had experienced similar. Getting worried as her temperament is changing. Shes getting grumpy due to itching but shes also started to try to bite. Usually shes very sweet. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Firstly...Hi and welcome to Champdogs :)

My 16 month old has had recurring pyoderma since she was about 4 months old. It's been pretty mild compared to some cases I've heard of but irritating for her nonetheless. At first she was having 10 day courses of ABs which would clear it up but within a few days there would be signs of it returning.

To cut a long story short, we changed vet in May of this year and she was spayed by the new vet. I asked the new vet about the pyoderma as she had another recurrence just around the time that her stitches were due to come out. He gave her a 4 week course of ABs, checked her after the 4 weeks and then another 4 week course. Along with the second course, he advised to give her fish oil supplements daily. I was already giving her 1000mg routinely per day and he advised me to increase it to 3000mg which I did. She finished the last course of ABs a month ago and so far, no recurrences (fingers crossed, knocking on wood etc). This is the longest period she has been clear since it was first diagnosed. Plus all that fish oil is making her coat gleam! :D

It can't hurt to try the fish oils as they can only be beneficial, even if they don't 'cure' the pyoderma, but if you do you will also need to supplement with vitamin E. Here are the products I use and can highly recommend: fish oils & Vitamin E

Hope you manage to get it under control soon. It's horrible knowing that they're itchy and uncomfortable.

Sorry...too late to edit my post but I should have added that my breed is much bigger than yours so you might want to check with your vet if those amounts would be appropriate (although you can't overdose on fish oils as such) :)
