Does anyone have any tips for cleaning teeth. I have tried on several occasions and failed My dog just doesn't like the tooth brush. I had given up, but have recently noticed the two big teeth at the front on his bottom jaw seem to be a little yellow. He is two and fed on dried food, we do give him chews on a regular basis but it doesn't seem to work. I am just about to try a carrot.

You could try Plaque off, its added daily to their food :)

not sure if the link works :) if it does, scroll down to near the bottom of the page.

Hi Louise

As suggested you could try using "Plaque Off" (added to the food) and also "Logic Gel" (a tooth gel applied by your finger, no need for a brush).

Personally I think what is best for cleaning teeth is regular gnawing on a large (uncooked) bone or giving a raw chicken wing each evening as a treat.

If you'd prefer not to go down that route then using both of the products mentioned together should hopefully make a difference.

There is also a homeopathic product called "Fragaria" which is simply dripped onto the tongue - I've not used it personally and have heard of some having great success with it but for others not working at all!

regards, Teri :)

Yes, I've used the fragaria tablets on missie and the logic gel is what I use on the others  :) Never tried the Plaque off, but know someone who did with good results.

Ah, didn't know Fragaria came in tab form too - but now I do ;)

Re the "Plaque Off" - my young 'un (who doesn't actually need it anyway) wont touch food with it in no matter how tempting and smelly   (usually means mum gets a double dose :D )

I don't know but I would imagine fragaria would come in a herbal form, certainly that would be the one to get my money ;)

That's the homoeopathic one Teri, the one that wouldn't get my money ;)
I believe fragaria itself is supposed to benefit teeth so I feel someone must produce a herbal preparation.

Is someone asking for your money   Say "No", firmly ;)

Personally my lot would rather have a free bone :P  Nature's own flosser!
- By Isabel Date 28.07.06 14:06 UTC
Free, sounds even better :)

I find cow hooves good too.  They stink but are more portable long lasting chews than the bones, so I use them to keep tyem amused on their benches, last ages unlike Rawhide and other supposed teeth cleaning chews that last seconds to minutes..

Fragaria - homoeopathic
"often used where there is considerable tartar or scaling on the teeth or bad breath"
from Canine Chemist
Thats the one I used, and it worked :)
- By Teri Date 28.07.06 14:09 UTC
I think the other one's more of a laxative

Now how's THAT gonna clean teeth   Mental picture - yuk, yuk, yuk (don't even go there :D

:P :P
- By Isabel Date 28.07.06 14:20 UTC
Ah, like many herbs lots of uses :)  Laxatives and teeth cleaning, two jobs(pun) in one :)
Although leaving on the teeth for 5 minutes might be a bit of a problem in the canine world:)

- By Isabel Date 28.07.06 14:27 UTC
No, I'll just spend my money on strawberries for my morning smoothies :)
- By Isabel Date 28.07.06 14:14 UTC
Yes, yes, yes I know there is a homoeopathic preparation :p  but what I was wondering was is there a herbal one about, it is a plant after all.

Think I'd rather use Colgate :D

Teri is absolutely right. I've wasted so much money on doggy toothpaste that do not work the latest being beaphar toothpaste as my two's teeth were going quite yellowy brown. This week I got a couple of free bones from the butcher, the result is amazing lovely white teeth. The only downside is upset tummies but that doesn't last.

Some interesting ideas there thanks. Plaque off does sound like the easiest option so will try that first. In regards to raw bones and chicken wings is it safe to do? I have always been given the impression that dogs can choke on small bones in chicken.
- By Teri Date 28.07.06 15:41 UTC
Providing that only raw bones are given which are an appropriate size for the dog and supervised while eating them they are perfectly safe :)

Large marrow bones for eg are really just for them to gnaw and exercise their jaws etc, while smaller bones such as chicken wings, turkey necks, rabbit carcasses etc are ideal for feeding whether as a treat or a full meal :)

If you're at all concerned, bash the chicken wings to break the bones and hold the end while your dog chews on it to begin with.  This will give you a better idea about whether he will crunch at them or try to swallow them whole :D

HTH, regards Teri

I will give it ago along with the plaque, i assume that plaque could be the cause of his fishy breath recently as well, so hopefully that may improve as well. Thanks everyone.
