Topic Other Boards / Foo / Online pharmacy - Rear Guard

After loosing Happy last year to fly strike, and suddenly having an influx of flys, I want to get Rear guard for my 2 rabbits.
I rang the vets and it will cost me £15 for 8-10 weeks/ rabbit :(
Wondering if the online pharmacies might be cheaper, but have tried Vet medic and they havnt got any (well I couldnt find any)
Any one able to recommend another online pharmacy????
Aparently you can but it over the counter at my vets.
Lea :)

According to this site, Lea, it is POM so you are going to need a prescription.
It is a new product so perhaps vet med just don't have it on their web site yet have you tried phoning them?

Rearguard is £15 from here too. It seems that's the regular price.

Are you sure you have got your calculations right Lea, it say to be used every six weeks well surely than bottle will do more than one rabbit perhaps even a couple of times, would that not get you through the British summer?
No, I've just seen on my link it is a single use bottle :(

My 'rabbity' friend swears by this stuff, it appears slightly cheaper at £13 for 12 weeks.

Thanks everyone.
Looks like it is just as cheap to get it from the vets.
I wouldnt have the guts to ask for my vet to sign a prescription!!!!!
So think I will get some from the vets.
Thanks again

It lasts ages - a bottle should easily do 2 rabbits a full Summer :)

Have you tried it???
Everywhere I have looked you need to use the whole bottle per rabbit :( If thats the case I will buy some from the vet and use it for them both. They live in the same crate!!!!
and Dawn, I am a bit worried about using insect repellant as rabbits seem to be less tolerant of some chemicals from what I have read :) But thanks for the suggestion

I checked the price at work yesterday, and we sell it at £13.30 including VAT. But it's a POM, so your rabbit'd need to be registered with us to get it.

Lea, why don't you just use some insect repellant on them?? I used it on the doggies when we lived in Scotty Land, home to the dreaded thousands and thousands of midges that used to eat the dogs alive!! Just gave them a quick spray round the ears and along backs and it kept everything off...maybe worth a try? and a dang site cheaper than rear guard!! All the best, Dawn X

Lea, I lost my rabbit Blossom last year to fly strike aswell and looking in my other rabbit Lavender's hutch there is just so many flies
I purchased Rear Guard from the vets and I was shocked it was so expensive for 1 bottle but I don't think there is any where cheaper when you add up the P & P.

How can you tell if she has the starting stages? When we found Blossom she was so bad the vet couldn't do anything. I know I sound careless but I've had lots of rabbits before and that had never happened and it was my first time owning a female rabbit. I just want to keep Lavender safe and prevent it happening again.

:(:(:(:(

Watch for "dire rear", keep the rabbits home tidy and poo free and therefore fly free, be alert to any flies around. Check bottoms daily.

And cats too. We had to put an elderly cat to sleep at work yesterday because of flystrike. :(
