we have a 3 year old spayed boxer bitch, she suffers from an underactive thyriod which she is on medication for. she seems to be gaining weight, she is fed on burns, she has 150g a day of this and a small portion of fresh meat. she is a very active dog but she seems just be putting on weight.
do you think that it would be best to cut down on her food or change her food to a low fat complete such as JWB or skinners.

any ideas please

Lucy

Try tinned Chappie, it's low fat and can be used for a 'diet' food.
That's what my hypothyroid Boxer has on vets advice and she's ok weight wise on it.

Burns do a diet food think it's called high oats if you wanted to try her on that.
Or there are other low fat completes that you could try her on.

The other thing is you could ask if the medication levels are right - as she may not
be on the right dosage is she's gaining lots of weight. This the vets can check by blood test.

thanks for your reply, we found out she had an underactive thyroid the beginning of the year and the vet had her on 600mircograms of Forthyron a day, which he cut down to 400micrograms at the end of june, so we wondered if that could be the reason for her weight gain.
shes not very overweight but we dont want it to become a problem.

Sounds like ehr medication might need checking if she is gaining again.

If your dog is gaining weight on a mere 150g per day of Burns, which is exceedingly low in fat and protein as it is then i would make an appointment with your vet.
How much exercise does she get daily, does she get plenty of outside(out of the garden) off lead walks?

150g seems like such a small amount, how does your dog handle it? Is she satisfied, does she pester you for more food etc etc?

I think burns is quite low in enough in fat, with changing to high oats version which is even lower in fat,and higher in grain
I have seen and heard time and again dogs putting ON weight with low fat foods due to their high grain/carb content,or not losing weight at all. These diets seem to be designed to maintain weight so the dog doesnt put on anymore, and IMHO should not be fed longterm as they are filled with mostly fillers that the dogs cant digest and just poop straight out. They have 'just' enough minerals, fat, protein etc to meet the minimum of standards, and i really worry about the dogs who are put on these food for a short amount of time, never mind long term

I would have her medication checked first, but i also have to say 150 g  is not a lot of food for an adult Boxer, My 3yr girl(Boxer) is on 375g Burns split into 2 meals a day, and she is just right,  can I ask why she is on so little food??

i would like to point out that in my first post, not only is she getting burns she also has fresh meat mixed in with it, after reading the feeding amount on the burns packet it states that she should be getting approx 200 to 300g a day, and because she has fresh meat with it the amount has been adjusted accordingly. we find this suitable for her and she doesnt go looking for more food and gets plenty of exercise be it out on a walk or in the garden playing with our other boxer.
we have spoke to the vet and he has informed us that weight gain is a common side affect from her thyroid medication.
