One of my hounds is very prone to corneal ulcers. Being clumsy doesnt help! he has a particularly bad one this time & i am beginning to wonder if there is not another option out there in the world of opthalmics. Just wondered if anyone else had tried any thing new recently?
Are they sure there is nothing actually7n rubbing and causing the ulcer. One of mine had an ectopic cillia growing through the middle of her yelid, adn despite askign them to check for stary lashes etc they never found it until after they treated an ulcer by sewing the third eyelid across. Aome weeks later she was blinking again. I changed Vets adn told him to check even more thoroughly and after turning the lid inside out with a powerful light and magnifier he found the hard hair about 1/4 inch under the inside of the lid.
Well what do you normally have done sam? I've had the third eyelid flaps and I've also had the peeling off of layers of the eye and also Interferon drops. Have you seen somebody like Pip Boydell, he would be THE man for eyes. :)
Have they tried the serum drops? New treatment now done in the UK. Where they make up drops from blood drawn from the affected dog. These drops tend to last 3 days before you need to go back and have more blood drawn to make more drops.
This I had done to my Boxer (who are also prone to corneal ulcers as a breed) approx year ago.
Another thing to suggest if your dog does suffer with corneal ulcers and they seem to take forever to heal, to ask for a thyroid test for the dog. Can be one of the symptoms of thyroid disfunction.
thanks all......GM, interferon can you tell me any more? Going for a 3rd eyelid this afternoon. !st time this lad has had this done although been down route with others in past. Just seems to be so frequent that i am despairing & it so recuces his quality of life, no swimming etc.....
Have you had him tested for hypothyroidism as this is one of the symptons. Had an Afghan who kept having corneal ulcers, as soon as one healed another would appear, she was tested and found to be hypo-t.
Have a dog at the moment with a corneal ulcer. She has had the eye debrided, and finally after changing the eye drops/cream 3 times, she has Clinigel which seems to be working a dream at the moment. Kat
