I bought a new laptop a few months ago and have played on it lots but not done anything else so today when i went to type a document and couldn't find anywhere to type (i.e. office document icon) I was a bit puzzled.  All the things I saved to disc previously are now on wordpad but I can't find anywhere to get a normal word document.  I reinstalled the windows XP home edition CD but its not there - infact I don't even know if it should be. What can I do? and how do I get word as I know it?  One day the shopping and surfing has to stop and the real work must begin
I'd appreciate any input from anybody who has any idea about computers.  Thanks

A lot of computers these days are sold WITHOUT Word installed and you have to buy MS Office to get it -costs a fair bit....... As I use Word a lot (being a writer) I always make sure to only buy computers that come with it installed, but sadly they are few and far between these days. Anything from PC World for instance no longer has it. However most computers instead have a cheapo simple programme called Microsoft Works, and part of that is a simple word processing programme, so look for that -chances are Works are on there but needs to be installed. (It is usually ON the computer but not yet installed.) Check in the start menu.

thanks goldmali but it doesn't have works either.  I might have to borrow a copy from somebody as I'm loathe to buy it especially since I recently sold my pc and all the software with it. GRRR!

It won't normally be part of yoru operating system.  I have it as part of Works, and others would ahve it as part of Office.

Hiya

You could download 'Open Office' which is a full free office suite and is compatible with Microsoft Office as well as other major Office Suites.  Best of all its free....it will take you a while to download though but its well worth it...Info and download here..

http://www.openoffice.org/

Hope this helps
